Tigers Top NLC Foe Northridge

MIDDLEBURY - John-Wesley Maierle may be the X-factor in determining Warsaw's success from this point of the season on.
The senior guard, who returned after missing three games with a broken thumb, scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds as the Tigers held off Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge 56-43 Friday night in boys basketball action.
While Maierle's stats weren't gaudy, he provided an emotional spark for a team that looked lackadaisical during his absence.
"You have to say that John-Wesley Maierle is our leader and emotional stalwart. He played with a lot of toughness out there tonight," said fourth-year Warsaw head coach Doug Ogle.
Maierle provided bookend scores for a 14-2 Warsaw run to start the game. Sandwiched in between Maierle's baskets were three's by Colin Clemens and Steve Lemasters.
The Tigers lived by the three against Northridge as they hit 8 of 14 from beyond the three-point arc.
Warsaw hit half of those three-pointers within the first three minutes of the first and third quarters.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 10-2 run in much the same fashion as their run to start the game.
While Warsaw looked sharp to start both halves, the Tigers were unable to remain consistent on the offensive end for the full 32 minutes.
Luckily for Warsaw the defensive intensity brought to Middlebury stuck around for the whole game.
The Tigers held Northridge sophomore standout Brent Eaton under his near 20-point per game average as he hit just 3 of 11 shots and finished with 12 points.
"We had a pretty good defensive performance," said Ogle.
In fact, the Tigers held Northridge to 31 percent from the field on the night as the Raiders struggled to get going.
Unlike Warsaw, Northridge was anemic from the three-point line hitting just 4 of 21 shots from behind the arc.
Despite Northridge's struggles, the Raiders did draw to within two points at halftime 23-21 and trailed by just seven points midway through the third quarter.
When Northridge appeared as if it would make a game of it, Warsaw responded with a big shot or takeaway.
After Matt Gipson hit a three-pointer to draw the Raiders to within seven in the third quarter, Clemens nailed a three of his own from the top of the key to extend Warsaw's lead back to double digits.
Clemens struggled with his shot selection at times but finish with 13 points, three steals and several dazzling assists.
Warsaw outscored Northridge 6-2 to end the third quarter and take a 44-31 lead heading into the final period. The Tigers appeared to have extended that lead as senior Mitch Reinholt banked in a 30-footer as the buzzer sounded but the referees waived off the basket.
The Tigers eliminated any chance of a Northridge comeback by hitting 9 of 12 free throws in the final eight minutes.
While Eaton finally came around for the Raiders in the fourth quarter, scoring five of his team-high 12 points, it was too little too late as Cabrera answered with seven fourth-quarter points of his own.
"I thought Shaun did a nice job," said Ogle of his veteran guard. "He made some big plays for us and that's what a senior point guard is supposed to do."
The Tigers finished the evening with a 29-19 rebounding edge over Northridge.
Maierle and Lemasters led the way with four boards each.
Tommy Reinholt was a spark off the bench for Warsaw as he finished with five points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
To go with his game-high in points, Cabrera wreaked havoc on the defensive end as he picked up six steals.
Warsaw finished 49 percent from the field in perhaps its sharpest performance since they lost Maierle Dec. 16 against rival Wawasee.
While the Tigers did win three straight without Maierle, the three wins came at the hands of struggling Elkhart Central and Whitko and 2A Rochester. Whitko, a one-win team, erased a 19-point deficit to Warsaw before losing by five and the Rochester win came in overtime.
Friday marked the 1,300th win in the 87-year history of the Warsaw program. Warsaw's overall record now stands at 1,300-717.
The Tigers, 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the NLC, look to make it 1301 tonight as they travel to the Summit City to take on Fort Wayne South. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
