The Tigers (8-2-1, 4-0 NLC) were without junior Diego Lopez, who has scored four goals this year, but the rest of the team picked up the slack as five players accounted for the six goals against the NorthWood Panthers (7-3, 1-2 NLC).
"We'd like to have Diego back, but we still have players that can step up," Warsaw coach Scott Bauer said. "We just have to do things a little bit differently. We have a lot of weapons this year. I'm blessed to have this kind of quality on the field."
Among those weapons are the program's all-time leading scorer in senior Corey Lopez, who scored the 55th and 56th goals of his career in the game. Also stepping up for Tigers is senior Jose Rodriguez, who will become the program's all-time leader in assists with one more. He currently sits at 27 career assists.
In the win over NorthWood, Corey Lopez netted the team's first goal in the 15th minute, when he found himself one-on-one with NorthWood senior goalkeeper Kyle Dijkstra. While sliding, he kicked the ball to the far post, getting it past Dijkstra and getting the Tigers on the board.
Rodriguez struck next, when he too found himself looking to create inside the box, but when he went for a cross, it bounced off a Panther defender's elbow, drawing the handball and setting up a penalty kick.
Rodriguez easily converted the penalty kick, giving Warsaw a 2-0 lead with 6:13 remaining in the first half.
"You always need that second goal," Bauer said. "A team that's down one goal still believes, even if they're an inferior side, that this is their day. (They believe) they can get something though a set piece or we'll make a mistake in the back. That second goal, usually when you're the superior side, breaks the back of the other team."
The Rodriquez goal did seem to loosen things up, as sophomore Zack Tucker scored off an assist from junior Grant Allbritten a minute-and-a-half later, putting the Tigers on top 3-0 at intermission.
Rodriguez and Corey Lopez increased their career numbers when Corey Lopez scored off a Rodriquez assist in the 53rd minute.
Following an own goal by the Panthers, the Tigers' final score came from senior Xavier Arellanes in the 65th minute, but by that time, the most noticeable player on the field for Warsaw was senior David Johnson.
Johnson, the team's goalkeeper the past three seasons, worked out an arrangement with Bauer, which would allow back-up goalkeeper Michael Yantz to get some action.
"We had on planned on getting my second-string goalie a half in each of the next two games," Bauer said. "To make it palatable today, I let (David) know I'd play him in the field. Then he jumped all over it. I think you could tell that he was really enjoying himself."
Diego Lopez appeared to be enjoying himself prior to the game, kicking the ball around with his teammates, but everyone will be a lot happier if his tests results come back with good news.
"He had an MRI Monday and we'll know (today) what the results are," Bauer said. "If he's good to go, we'll put him in Thursday, but he's going to be a little rusty. He hasn't really been on the ball for a week now."
By getting practices in by the end of the week, Diego Lopez would probably be a go for Saturday's crosstown game against Lakeland Christian Academy, which is set for 6 p.m.
