Tigers Take Second In NLC Tournament

Warsaw and Wawasee came in second and third behind first-place Goshen in Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament hosted by Northridge.Ê

Goshen's win gives the Redskins sole possession of the season conference championship.Ê Goshen took first place with only four individual champions, while Wawasee had five champions: Josh DeGood (112 pounds), Chet Wortinger (119), J.J. Davis (152), Kevin A. Carr (160) and Jamie Salazar (275).

Warsaw had eight wrestlers in the finals, but the lone champion for the Tigers was sophomore Kris Hueber (171). Matt Zellers (152), a runnerup, was one three wrestlers named asÊ "at large" in the All-Conference selections.

Coach Tony Boley of Warsaw was named Coach of the Year along with Goshen coach Jim Pickard.Ê

Boley said, "It was a well-run tourney, smooth and organized with excellent officials."Ê He was proud of the team effort put forth by his wrestlers but said "We missed taking first place in the tourney by just 5-1/2 points. Just one more win from one of our guys would have given us first place.

"We almost won it with only one champ.Ê The entire team helped score points."

Wawasee's first champ was DeGood (112), who beat Warsaw's Adam Harter in a 5-3 decision.Ê In the next weight class Wortinger (119) took first place for the Warriors by a 20-9 major decision over Nick Cochran of Goshen.Ê

In another championship matchup with Warsaw, Wawasee's Davis (152) outlasted Zellers in 5-2 decision.Ê Currently ranked third in the state, Carr (160) earned his championship with a 7-4 decision of Brian Goss of Goshen, who has also been state-ranked.Ê The Warriors and the Tigers tangled for the third time in the finals when Salazar (275) took Warsaw's Joey Navarro to the mat in 3:32.

Eight of the Tigers lined up for the final round, but Kris Hueber (171) was the only champion for Warsaw.Ê Hueber defeated Matt Blosser of Goshen in a 7-3 decision.

Tim Roe lost by one point (3-2) to Schuyler Barkes of Goshen. Richard Wolfe (145) was pinned by Goshen's Mark Oswald in 1:20. Then Steve Fribley (189) was pinned in 5:37 by state-ranked Matt Arvesen of Plymouth, and Steve McKinley (215) made his way to the championship round by means of two pins (50 seconds and 1:59), but in the finals he was nailed at 1:17 by state-ranked Matt Gibson of Northridge.Ê

In consolation matches, Matt Coy (103, Wawasee) took third place with a 3:21 pin of Keith Grubaugh of Northridge, while Anthony Boley (103, Warsaw) pinned Brandon Wiley of Northwood in 40 seconds for fifth place. Adam Bott (119, Warsaw) had to settle for sixth place, losing his consolation match 7-3 to Tyler Keyser of Plymouth.

At 125, Kevin M. Carr (Wawasee) took third place by pinning Micah Bigler of Northridge in 4:49. Warsaw's John Milton (125) wound up in sixth place after a 5-3 loss to Brett Bultemeyer of Concord. Ken McKintosh (130 Wawasee) landed in fourth place after losing 8-3 to Tim Kidder of Northridge.Ê

Joe Wildman (135), returning to varsity wrestling for Warsaw, defeated NorthWood's Josh Snyder in an 8-3 decision to grab third place, while Josh Roa (Wawasee) lost a 6-2 to Dan Magee of Northridge to wind up in sixth place.

A Tiger and a Warrior met again at 140 pounds in a consolation match for fifth place when Joe Swanson (Warsaw) came out the winner in a 12-0 major decision of Rob Chalfant.Ê

Chris Adkins (145 Wawasee) battled out a 13-12 win over Jered Baker to finish up in fifth place. Isaac Perry (160 Warsaw) took third place by beating Steve Harrell of Northridge 6-4.Ê Craig Jensen (189 Wawasee) was upended by Concord's Chris Leffert in 50 seconds to finish in fourth place, then Tom Bryan (215 Wawasee) answered back in his consolation match with a 59-second pin of Mark Palbykin of Plymouth to earn third place.

The Northern Lakes Conference boasts a number of quality wrestlers, including six who are state-ranked.Ê

Kevin A. Carr (160) of Wawasee is third, Arvesen (189) of Plymouth is fourth, Barkes (130) of Goshen is sixth, Salazar (275) of Wawasee is 11th, and Zellers (152) of Warsaw is 15th. Ê

In the team scores the top three schools finished within a mere 12 points of each other.Ê Team scores were Goshen 206.5, Warsaw 201, Wawasee 194.5, Plymouth 169, Northridge 155, Northwood 103, Concord 77.

Sectional meets are on Jan. 30. Warsaw hosts a sectional with Triton, Plymouth, and Tippecanoe Valley. Wawasee competes in the East Noble Sectional at 9 a.m. Saturday.
