That game, one that many circled on the schedule as the potential conference championship game before the season even started, is scheduled for Jan. 29 in Nappanee.
Hosting the Goshen RedHawks Friday night, the Warsaw Tigers did their part and took another step toward repeating as NLC champions with a 55-41 win.
Warsaw is now 3-0 in conference play and improved to 11-0 overall for the first time since 1992.
NorthWood, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Class 3A poll, beat Northridge 73-66 Friday and improved to 12-1 and 3-0.
“We talk about the NorthWood game everyday in practice, at some point,” said Ogle. “A lot of the things we’re doing now are for that game, defensively.
“We’re not showing all of what we’re doing, but the NorthWood game is on our radar. We also say that the NorthWood game isn’t gonna mean as much if we don’t hold serve here, and now we have to go to Concord, to McCuen (Gymnasium). We’re very focused. This is a mature group from a competitive standpoint.”
The Tigers were able to beat Goshen by dominating the boards and with an impressive defensive effort in the second half.
Warsaw outrebounded the RedHawks 27-11, including a 9-5 advantage on the offensive glass, and held Goshen to six points in the third quarter.
The RedHawks scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, but made a trio of three-pointers late in the game after trailing by as many as 24 points to do so.
“I felt like our defense was good tonight,” said Ogle. “(C.J.) Detweiler was averaging 12 points and scored two. (Brady) Bechtel had to earn his 12 (points). Had they not made some threes at the end, it was gonna be in the mid-30s. So I was happy with our defense.
“I think our players believed me when I told them Goshen had the potential to play us tough, and it was a seven-point game at halftime.”
Warsaw led 15-8 after one quarter of play and 25-18 at halftime before building a comfortable lead in the third quarter.
The Tigers’ largest lead of the game was a 53-29 advantage midway through the final frame.
Senior Paul Marandet, who was 4 of 5 from the field and 7 of 8 at the charity stripe, led Warsaw with 15 points, five assists and three rebounds.
Junior Kyle Mangas finished with 14 points, while senior Riley Rhoades scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in his first start of the season, and junior Jeremy David chipped in with seven points and five boards.
“I thought this was Paul’s best game to date,” said Ogle. “He’s getting more confident offensively. And I thought Riley Rhoades, in his first start, did a good job, which helps our post depth ... because now (Jaceb) Burish has a lot of experience because he’s started a bunch of games. We’ll continue to play (Braxton) Minix.
“When you have four post guys like we do, that’s nice. Our size ... not that we’re that big ... but our size was a little bit of a factor.”
Senior Evan Schmidt scored five points in the win, while sophomore Ross Johnson and Burish, a junior, scored two points each.
Bechtel led Goshen with 12 points, but needed 13 shots to do so.
Colton Potter and Clayton Litwiller scored six points each in the loss, as the RedHawks fell to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the NLC, and Mitchell Walters and James Paetkau chipped in with five and four points, respectively.
The Tigers are in action again tonight when they host Fort Wayne Snider, followed by a home game Tuesday against Mishawaka Marian.
Snider, which fell to 7-3 with a one-point loss to Homestead Friday, is led by 6-foot-10 junior Malik Williams.
According to rivals.com Williams has already received Division I offers from Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, Wake Forest and North Carolina State, among others.
“I’m glad that our team’s health is good, and we’re excited about the game Saturday night (against Snider),” said Ogle. “It’s going to be such a different game, such a different-looking team. I don’t know who all has offered Malik Williams ... I’m anxious to ask Coach (John) Todor who all has actually offered him. I know he’s visited Kentucky. He may be down their list a little, but if they have you down that tells you something. I know he was up at Michigan State this summer on an unofficial visit.
“They don’t have just him, they have other guys. They have a big front line. They have two other guys that are 6-7 and 6-8. It’ll be a lot different-looking opponent, and we’re looking forward to it.”
