Tigers Take Big Step Toward Winning NLC
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw won golf matches last week by shooting a 155, 153 and 150 in three nine-hole matches.
Monday, the Tigers outdid themselves.
They stayed unbeaten by firing a season-best 149 over nine holes in Monday's Northern Lakes Conference match against NorthWood and Concord, held at McCormick Creek. NorthWood shot a 152 on its home course and Concord a 160.
Warsaw moved its overall record to 14-0 and its NLC record to 4-0. NorthWood dropped to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the NLC, while Concord fell to 10-7 and 0-4 in the NLC.
Warsaw's worst score by any golfer was 40, four strokes over on the par-36 course. Justin Howell shot a 36, Jason Henthorn 37, Adam Johnson 37, Aaron Turner 39 and Ryan Slone 40.
"I'm really pleased to see the way we played tonight, especially coming off prom weekend and all those distractions and activities," Warsaw coach Bob Turner said. "We normally don't play well on that following Monday.
"All the kids played to their potential."
Entering the match, Bob Turner considered NorthWood as the main threat standing between Warsaw and the NLC title. But Turner was surprised to learn after the match the Panthers had two losses.
Warsaw has two NLC opponents left, Goshen and Plymouth Thursday at Rozella Ford. Goshen handed NorthWood its other NLC loss.
"I thought NorthWood would be one of the teams, but I'm kind of surprised Goshen is another one," Bob Turner said. "We have them at our place. We're sitting pretty good.
"They gotta come to our place and beat us at our place. Rozella Ford is usually a tough place for opponents."
Should the Tigers beat Plymouth and Goshen, they would be 6-0 entering Saturday's NLC Tournament. But to win the NLC, they would have to place well at the tournament. They do not automatically win the conference with their 6-0 regular season record.
"If we can go to that tournament at 6-0," Bob Turner said, "that at least gets our foot in the door."
The Tigers are seeking their seventh NLC title under Turner.
