The Warsaw boys and girls swimming and diving teams won by almost identical scores Tuesday.

Hosting the Wawasee Warriors, Warsaw's boys team won 121-64, while the girls picked up the Northern Lakes Conference win by a count of 122-64 at Warsaw Community Pool.[[In-content Ad]]The victories came after losses to Concord Saturday, the first NLC setback for both the Tigers' boys and girls, who have identical 5-1 records in the conference.

"It was a nice bounce-back coming home and having the girls senior night," Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said. "We're swimming good. We had some really good times tonight."

The loss leaves the Wawasee boys at 1-5 in the NLC, while the girls are now 2-4.

"They have great swimmers this year and they're swimming fast," Wawasee coach Julie Robinson said of Warsaw. "For my kids, it was just trying a couple different races for a few kids to see where we're going to place them for conference."

The best swimmer in the water actually came from Wawasee in the form of sophomore Brittany Robinson.

Of the Lady Warriors' three wins, Robinson had two, as she took first in the 100 butterfly (58.23) and 100 back (59.71).

In the 100 back, she was just 0.49-of-a-second off the Warsaw Community Pool record without exerting herself down the stretch. She got that fast time by taking a body-length lead before she even came out of the water, and led by two body lengths after the first turn.

"She has a great underwater kick, and she's swimming well," Aukeman said of Robinson, who swam the back over five seconds faster than the boys winner. "She could really swim any event. Whatever two events she swam in tonight, she was going to win."

When asked what event the coach's daughter may not win, Julie Robinson had a one-word answer.

"Breaststroke," she said with a laugh.

During her prep career, the only time Robinson hasn't taken first place in an event was at last year's state finals. Among the state's best, she placed seventh in the 100 fly and eighth in the 50 free.

"She's doing okay, but she's one of those who hasn't decided what races she's going to do yet," the Wawasee coach said.

Despite Robinson's swims, she wasn't enough to compete against the team effort of the Lady Tigers.

On top 60-34 after the sixth event, the Warsaw girls blew it open by sweeping the 100 free and 500 free, building its lead to 86-40 in the process.

The Warsaw boys were never really threatened either, winning four of the first five events, as well as the final six.

The tightest race of the night came in the 100 breast, where Warsaw senior Andrew Cutshall nipped Wawasee's Caleb Buyer with a time of 1:06.24 to the Warrior senior's 1:06.37.

"Andrew Cutshall had not swam the breaststroke before, so we thought we'd try that," Aukeman said. "He ends up making our top 10 list here at Warsaw. We knew he had a good breaststroke, we just hadn't used him there yet."

Warsaw wraps up its conference season against the NLC's best team in Northridge Thursday.

"It's going to be kind of tough going Tuesday-Thursday meet with two pretty good teams," Aukeman said. "We won tonight and we'll go up to Northridge, where they have a new facility. We'll get to check that out, and we'll see what we can do up there."

Wawasee wraps up its NLC schedule against Plymouth Saturday at home.

Following meets this week, both girls teams will prepare for the conference meet at Concord on Jan. 21.

"I told them (the last two meets) are going to help me make decisions for conference and sectionals," Aukeman said. "It's not just racing and trying to score some points and do well. It's also, 'Can I make it into a lineup?'"
