ROCHESTER - Warsaw golf coach Bob Turner is still trying to figure out how good his team is. Thursday, he found out how good it can be.

The Tigers shot a school record 169 in dismantling Tippecanoe Valley (205) and Wabash (241) at Mill Creek.

"They were surprising me," Turner said. "We thought Valley was a pretty good team and 205 is a good score. I told the girls that they better be ready, and obviously they were."

As if the 169 wasn't enough, Warsaw's Kari Wrobel just missed shooting the individual school record that Ashley Cooper had just set Tuesday.

Before this week, no Warsaw golfer had ever shot better than 40. Cooper shattered that with a 38 Tuesday, and Wrobel shot a 39 Thursday. If Wrobel hadn't double bogeyed the first hole or three-putted the last hole, she could have tied or broken the record.

"I knew they could shoot like that," Turner said. "If they continue to shoot like that, then we can compete with some bigger people. And the other girls all shot well."

Warsaw had consistency all the way down to its No. 8 player. Cooper followed Wrobel's 39 with a 41. Lara Reed shot 44, and April Turner had 45. Tosha Nance finished with a 48 to close out the varsity scores. Warsaw's three junior varsity players also shot well. Lesley Daniels had a 47, Jaci Thallemer had a 50, and Kaci Jones finished with a 51.

"I'm pleased with every one of them, all eight of them," Turner said. "They played smart out there tonight. It was real fun tonight."

Even though Valley lost to Warsaw by 36 strokes, Vikings coach Roger Moriarty was still pleased with his team's performance. Mary Gast shot a 47 to lead the Vikings, and Erica Pontious added a 50 out of the No. 4 spot.

"Our average for the year is 211 as a team," Moriarty said. "That's our second-best match of the year so it wasn't too bad. Right now we're experimenting with some girls."

That experimentation cost Valley a few strokes, but nothing that would have made up the difference. Ginger Ervin, who usually plays with the top five, played on the junior varsity squad and responded with a 49, the second-best score among all Valley golfers.

Besides that, No. 1 golfer Brenda Rose has struggled a little bit of late, and she shot just a 53 Thursday.

"We've got to get Brenda going," Moriarty said. "The last two matches she hasn't shot well, and I'm not sure what the problem is. She's our best player by far."

Wabash was led by Chelsea Beauchamp with a 51, but struggled to last place after No. 1 golfer Jennifer Deturk shot a 62. She was shooting a solid score but put up a nine on hole No. 5 and a 16 on the following hole.

Warsaw (7-0) will host Wawasee Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., while Valley (8-4) will compete in the TRC Invitational back at Mill Creek Saturday.
