When Scott Bauer took the head coaching position of the Warsaw boys soccer program, he had expectations.

"Well, my expectations were to improve upon last year's record, win the conference, and we didn't win the conference," said Bauer. "But if we win on Saturday, we'll finish second by ourselves. The team (Goshen) that won the conference only loss came to us. I'm not completely disapointed, but I thought we played farely well in the conference except the draw to Wawasee. The draws to Northridge and Concord I could see."

The Tigers did improve upon last year's record.

After a 3-1 win Thursday over Huntington North, the Tigers improved their overall season record to 6-4-4. A year ago Warsaw finished its season with a 7-9-3 record.

After the Tigers host Plymouth Saturday night at Fisher Field - Senior Night - they will play Peru at 8 p.m. Monday in the Columbia City Sectional.

"I want to win the sectional," said Bauer. "We've improved upon the record from last year. They were 7-9-3 last year. They had a losing record. We've met two of my goals. The next step is to win sectional."

The rest of the Columbia City Sectional field is made up of Central Noble, Wawasee, Carroll, Huntington North and the host Eagles. Wawasee drew the bye and will play the winner of the Central Noble/Columbia City matchup at 6 p.m. Wednesday. If Warsaw gets past Peru, it would play Carroll in the second round.

"I know of Wawasee and Huntington North," said Bauer. "I don't know of Peru. I don't want to downplay the signifagance of that game, but it's my understanding that we can play with them. After that, we have Carroll, who has been very strong. We believe we have a chance. They (Carroll) were 12-2-1 the last I looked, and they beat (Fort Wayne) Canterbury, who has won state the last two years."

Warsaw has played Carroll once already this year. The Tigers fell 2-0, but Bauer said he thinks his team was right there with the talented Chargers.

"We lost to them 2-0 in the invite," said Bauer. "In the second half, we didn't allow them any goals, and we had opportunities. If we come in and play like we did against Goshen, we have a chance."

To be successful, Bauer is counting on possibly the most important person on the field: his goalie, although he doesn't know for sure who it will be.

"My keeper's gonna have to come out and make some good stops and direct the defense," said Bauer. "Jake Silveus, our captain, has to be vocal and he has to lead the back line. The back line has been solid all year long. We can't be intimidated by Carroll."
