Tigers Send Four Wrestlers To Semistate

Seven area wrestlers advanced from the Goshen Regional to the Fort Wayne Semistate.
Four were from Warsaw: Joey Navarro, Isaac Perry, Anthony Boley and Kris Hueber. Navarro and Perry were champions, while Boley was runner-up and Hueber took a third place.
NorthWood's three wrestlers advancing to Fort Wayne were Jesse Espinoza, Nick Roelandts and Brandon Garner.Ê Espinoza was champion while Roelandts and Garner placed third.
ÊÊTippecanoe Valley
Tippecanoe Valley's representatives at the Goshen Regional included Wes Ramsey (145), along with Tim Miller (119), Kevin Day (130), Nathan Shewman (135) and Tyler Kottkamp (189). None of the Valley wrestlers advanced to the Fort Wayne Semistate.
Miller, Day, Shewman and Kottkamp lost their first-round matches to bring their seasons to an end. Ramsey, after winning in round one, lost in round two when he was pinned in 30 seconds by the eventual champ, Jimtown's Clint Pontius.
Ramsey's season ended when he was nailed by Brandon Booth of Angola in 1:33.

Triton's two representatives were stopped at the Goshen Regional.Ê
Errik Lemler (112) won his opening round match by pinning Elkhart Central's Steve Sears in 47 seconds. Then Lemler lost in the semifinals to the eventual champ, NorthWood's Jesse Espinoza.
Lemler's season ended in the consolation round when he was pinned at 2:26 by Goshen's Kevin Russell.ÊÊ
Tate Chapman (140) lost in round one, bringing his first varsity season to a conclusion.

In his round one match, NorthWood's Troy Cox (125) was ahead 8-2 when he was surprised and pinned by Jimtown's Aaron McCuddy in 3:18.
Josh Snyder lost his consolation round match, 8-3 to John Bellman of Bremen. In round one, Josh Metzler (145) was the victim of a 13-5 major decision at the hands of Clint Pontius. Neil Widmer (171) also lost in round one to Lakeland's Jon Mickem.

Warsaw's Chris Riley (125), as well as Micah Seisennop (145), Nick McKinley (152) and Richard Wolfe (171), were ousted in round one matches.Ê
McKinley was pounded by eventual champion Shawn Barnett (Jimtown), who scored an 18-3 technical fall at 2:43.

NorthWood's Nick Roelandts (119) took third after losing in the semifinals to the eventual champion, Jimtown's Charles Koecke.Ê In the consolation round, Roelandts won by an 8-1 decision over Goshen's Tom Skinner to advance to the semistate.Ê Brandon Garner (130) also took third place. After a round two loss, Garner edged Eric Bryan of Fremont in a 3-2 decision.

Anthony Boley (103) exploded in his round one match with a quick pin of NorthWood's Brandon Wiley in 28 seconds.Ê In the semifinals, Boley was up 11-5 when he pinned Sean Drury of Elkhart Memorial in 4:59.
In the final, Boley wound up in second place when was pinned in 1:29 by Goshen's Gerardo Quiroz.
Kris Hueber (215) wrestled in pain on Saturday. He was injured in Tuesday's practice, and his status throughout the week was uncertain.Ê
However, he quickly notched a pin in his opening match, at 2:13 over Fremon'ts Joseph McNaughton.Ê Hueber was upset in the semifinals by the eventual champion, Bremen's James Strembel. Strembel scored two takedowns in the first period to go up 4-1. Hueber managed an escape in the second period and escape in the second period and a takedown in the third, but Strembel had two more escapes to hold a 6-4 lead.
Hueber's takedown attempt at the buzzer was not counted so Strembel came out the winner.
Hueber went to the consolation round, where he faced Lakeland's Javier Arroyo.Ê Hueber dug down deep to came up with a 6-0 decision for a third-place finish.
ÊArea champions at the Goshen Regional
NorthWood's champion was Jesse Espinoza (112), a senior.Ê He first pinned Lakeland's Brandon Murray in 47 seconds, and then in round two, Espinoza defeated Triton's Errik Lemler 5-0.Ê
In the championship match, Espinoza edged out Jimtown's Troy Swindman 6-4 to nab first place.Ê
Espinoza, ranked 10th in the state, takes a 31-1 record to the Fort Wayne Semistate.
Warsaw had two champions, Isaac Perry (160) and Joey Navarro (275).Ê
Perry won his first match against Goshen's Nick Miller using a string of five takedowns to tally a 10-4 decision.
Perry's second-round match against Northridge's Steve Harrell was, in the words of Warsaw coach Tony Boley, "scary."
Perry scored two takedowns to build a 4-1 lead, but then Harrell reversed control as Perry attempted a cradle.Ê
Suddenly Perry found himself on his back in big trouble. Perry squirmed out of the nearfall and managed an escape, but Harrell was ahead 6-5.
In the second period, Harrell chose the down position and scored an escape to go up 7-5.Ê Perry was in the down position for round three and quickly scored a reversal to tie the score.Ê
Perry then cut and took down Harrell twice to come out with an 11-9 win.
In the finals Perry, an excellent wrestler on his feet, calmly put together three takedowns and an escape to capture a 7-1 win for the championship.Ê Perry, ranked No. 6 in the state, advance to the semistate with a 34-1 record.
Joey Navarro repeated as regional champion at 275 pounds. He won his first two matches with convincing first period pins: Fairfield's Tom Joint at 51 seconds and Northridge's Ryan Eaton at 41 seconds.Ê
Navarro has taken on Jason Dickison time after time since middle school.Ê
Navarro has gained confidence on his feet, and in the finals at Goshen, he hit a couple of slick takedowns against Dickison, taking a 7-3 decision to earn the championship and a trip to the semistate.
Navarro is ranked No. 3 in the state and now boasts a record of 34-1.
Two NLC wrestlers retained unblemished records in nabbing regional championships.
Goshen's Schuyler Barkes, champion at 135 pounds who now boasts a record of 29-0, and Plymouth's Matt Arveson, champion at 189.Ê
Arveson, whose record is now 27-0, was the only wrestler to win all of his matches by pins, in a combined total time of 8:02.Ê Barkes is ranked No. 1 in the state, and Arveson is No. 2.Ê Team scores are not tabulated after the sectional, but the Goshen Regional was dominated by Jimtown.
The Jimmies had four champions and three runners-up.
The top three finishers from four regionals (Carroll, Delta, Fort Wayne Snider and Goshen) qualify for the semistate, so 12 wrestlers will compete in each of the 14 weight classes. The semi-state will be held at Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum Saturday.
