Tigers Send 5 To State
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
FORT WAYNE - Last week Warsaw track and field coach Troy Akers called the Wayne Regional the best track regional in the state.
Nothing changed his mind Thursday night.
Warsaw, a team that won a sectional, finished ninth with 27.33 points in Thursday's 41-team Wayne Regional. Fort Wayne Northrop won with 73 points, while Fort Wayne Wayne pulled in second with 69.
"This is where you gotta go," Akers said after Thursday's meet. "The best of the best is here."
Warsaw's Jon Hill and Greg Seiss will advance to the state meet in individual events. The Tigers are also sending their 3,200 relay team.
The top three in each event automatically advance to the state meet, as well as those who beat a state qualifying time.
Hill finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.65 seconds. Seiss took fifth in the 800, but his time of 1:57.19 beat the state qualifying time of 1:57.47. Warsaw's 3,200 relay team of Justin Rice, David Hoffert, Jon Dock and Seiss took second with a time of 7:58.65.
"In the 800, Seiss fell at the start, got back up and ran a great race," Akers said. "He finished with a career-best time.
"Jon's 400 was the best time he has run. It's a shame he's not running the (1,600) relay down there."
The one other event Akers thought Warsaw would advance to the state meet in? The 1,600 relay, the last event of the evening.
Jose Esquivel ran the first leg for the Tigers and had them in first place. Seiss ran the second leg. Still the Tigers were neck-and-neck for first place. Then he handed off to Hoffert, who was filling in for the injured Shaun Mudd. By the time Hoffert finished, the Tigers had fallen to the back of the pack. He handed off to Hill, but it was too late to make a move. A gap separated Hill from the pack.
Ending the night by failing to crack the top eight in the 1,600 relay left a bad taste in Akers' mouth. Warsaw's 1,600 relay team went to the state meet last season. Three of the four - Esquivel, Hill and Seiss - were back this year.
Interviewed only five minutes after the 1,600 relay, much of what Akers had to say was about the 1,600 relay.
"As far as any bombs, you can tell I'm upset," Akers said. "The only disappointment is the 1,600 relay. I'm hurtin' very bad for my boys in the 1,600 relay. We told them all year, 'You gotta have four legs. Three legs won't get you there.'
"Last year we were in a similar situation, and the kids ran out of their minds. They were just as tired, and three of the four were the same kids. I guess they wanted it a little more last year as a whole. They were the leaders, the kids we look up to. For some reason or another, it didn't work out.
"It's too bad. Jose was fresh and ran a great first leg. Greg ran a great leg."
Hoffert had competed in one other event, the 1,600, which was the fourth event of the night. Asked what happened to Hoffert in the 1,600 relay, the 16th event, Akers said: "Three races and a lot of heat and humidity .... obviously, it sapped him. I guess. I would have thought between the 1,600 and the (1,600) relay with nothing between, you'd have enough endurance to bounce back, as good a runner he is. But he just didn't have it tonight."
So confident was Akers about Warsaw placing high in the 1,600 relay that he pulled Hill out of the 200. Hill took second in the 200 at sectional and was the fourth seed at the regional. He has the best time in the area in the 200, 22.2 seconds, and that time would have placed him second at the regional.
But Akers wanted Hill in the 1,600 relay. And then the 1,600 relay "bombs," in Akers' words.
"I scratched him last week so he could be fresh in the 400 and mile relay," Akers said.
Everybody who placed in the top eight scored points. Others who did this for Warsaw included Scott Shepherd, who took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 21-feet, 7-inches; Hoffert, who took seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 4:29.55; and Justin Bellamy, who tied for eighth in the high jump with a leap of 6-2.
Frustration from the 1,600 relay aside, Akers left the meet satisfied.
"It was nice to get as many kids as we had move on," Akers said. "They battled the heat and humidity and probably the best competition regional-wise you can find anywhere in the state.
"The goal is to get as many people down to state as possible. We're happy. We're sending a couple individuals and a relay team. Those kids will come back with a medal. That's their goal."
The state meet will be June 6 at 4 p.m. at the Indiana University Track Stadium in Indianapolis.
