Like a snowball rolling down a hill, Warsaw's varsity volleyball team picked up momentum as Thursday's home match with Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen wore on.

In the end, the Tigers walked away with a 15-6, 15-3 victory.

"Of course I'm happy with the win, but we made too many serving mistakes that broke our momentum in the first game," first-year Tiger coach Doug West said. "We played better as the match went on. I think we served tougher in the second game and kept them out of sync."

The win improves the Tigers to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the NLC; Goshen falls to 1-6 and 0-1.

Warsaw jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first game, but a sideout resulted in two service points from Redskin junior Kelly Eldridge.

Goshen took a 5-4 lead on its next serve when junior Angie Cox stepped to the line. Tiger senior Myra Sells killed Goshen's momentum with a powerful kill, and then teammate Cassie Harding served as the Tigers scored two points to take a 6-5 lead.

With the score knotted at 6, Sells stepped to the serving line and chalked up three points, two coming on powerful kills from Nicole DeFord and Michelle DeGeeter.

After a sideout, senior Abby Sumpter served as the Tigers rattled off six straight to pick up the first-game win.

"I'm real pleased with the girls," West, who played and Ball State and was on the coaching staff at IU and Nebraska, said. "The girls are working hard and having a good time. I think we're developing and experiencing some success while we're devolping. We want to be a completely different team in a couple months, but we're doing good things right now. We have some pretty good senior leadership."

The Tigers raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second game before the Redskins closed within five, 8-3. Warsaw picked up points while Krystan Klotz, Kesley Kline and Grace Beck served to take an 11-3 lead. After a few sideouts, Warsaw sealed the deal and picked up the 15-3 win.

Sells, DeGeeter and Klotz all tallied four kills for the Tigers, while Sumpter dished up 17 assists. Sumpter led the Tigers in serving points with nine, while Sells had eight, Beck had four and DeGeeter had four.

Warsaw will host a tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. with Lafayette Harrison, South Bend Riley and South Bend Clay.
