Tigers Rally, But Fall Short

GOSHEN – As his team’s double-digit lead dwindled, Brian Bechtel said he couldn’t help but think of the past.
Goshen High School’s boys basketball coach couldn’t help but remember last year, or 2009, or 2003.
The Redskins have had opportunitites to put the Warsaw Tigers away, only to come up short.
And after Goshen led 26-10 at halftime Friday night, things certainly got interesting in the fourth quarter. In the end, though, the host Redskins pulled out a 56-51 Northern Lakes Conference win.
“We’ve been in this situation before, and Warsaw has gotten the better of us,” said Bechtel, whose team improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. “We’ve had chances to pull out wins against Warsaw and didn’t. I know our guys remember last year, and the kids wanted this tonight.”
Last year, Warsaw’s Jared Bloom hit a pair of free throws with one second remaining, lifting the Tigers to a 45-43 win.
Bloom tried to play the part of the hero again Friday, scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half, as Warsaw cut Goshen’s 16-point halftime lead to two, 50-48, when junior Nate Pearl hit a trey with 26 seconds remaining.
The Redskins iced the game at the free throw line.
Goshen senior Jesse Good made 10 of 12 charity tosses in the fourth quarter, including 6 of 6 in the final 18 seconds.
Good finished the game with 18 points, as did classmate Sam Stegelmann.
“We put a lot of responsibility on our seniors after our (54-30) loss (to Concord) last week,” said Bechtel. “We asked them to step up their leadership.”
While the Tigers shot 67 percent from the field in the second half, they shot just 27 percent in the first half.
Warsaw, which had won five games in a row and seven of its last eight, made just 4 of 15 attempts in the first half and was outscored 14-4 in the first quarter and 12-6 in the second stanza.
“Our offensive woes in the first half hurt us,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team fell to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the NLC. “We were rushing things. We just didn’t have patience, and we compounded that by not shooting well, and we compounded that by not rebounding well. We didn’t have poise tonight, especially in the first half.”
In the second half, Warsaw made 16 of 24 shots, including a 4-of-4 effort beyond the arc from Pearl.
The 5-foot-9 junior hit three treys in the fourth quarter, bringing Warsaw’s fans to their feet, and reminding Bechtel of games in recent years.
“We had them stopped, and then in the second half they played very well,” Bechtel said of the Tigers. “Bloom hit some shots and used his size as an advantage, and Pearl hit some big threes. I thought Warsaw played well in the second half.”
Pearl finished with 12 points for the Tigers, while senior Taylor Cone and junior Jordan Stookey scored eight and seven points, respectively.
“I’m proud of the guys for battling, we just didn’t play with intelligence and poise,” said Ogle, whose team had won each of its last three games by two points. “Tonight we took a couple big steps backward offensively. We knew it would be a difficult game. We knew Goshen would be ready, and they were.”
Freshman Brady Bechtel also scored in double figures for the Redskins, finishing with 10.
With the five-point loss, Warsaw fell to second place in the conference standings.
Concord and NorthWood are both 3-0, while Warsaw and Goshen are 2-1, Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth are 1-2 and Northridge and Wawasee are 0-3.
The Tigers host Concord Friday, and then entertain NorthWood on Jan. 25.
