Tigers Raid Northridge

MIDDLEBURY - Though small in stature, Nic Moore and Taylor Long played like giants for Warsaw Community High School's varsity boys basketball team Friday night.

Moore, a 5-foot-8 freshman, and Long, a 5-7 junior, were a big reason the Tigers beat Northern Lakes Conference rival Northridge 66-62 in front of a lively crowd in Middlebury.[[In-content Ad]]The NLC clash was the Ch. 46 Game of the Week, and the Tigers' sixth straight win improved them to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

"Nic Moore was huge," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said of his ultra-talented rookie, who turned in a performance that included a team-high 16 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. "That's a heck of a game against Derrick Troyer. He had Troyer on him the whole game. He's quick as a cat. That was a nice game for No. 11 (Moore)."

Moore scored seven of his points in the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach by hitting 1 of 2 free throws with 6.5 seconds remaining, giving the Tigers a 66-59 lead.

Troyer hit a three-pointer with a second left on the clock to account for the final score.

The loss, which halted Northridge's win streak at four games, dropped the Raiders to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

"Northidge is good," said Ogle. "For us to come up here and win this game as young as we are, that says a lot about the quality of players on this team. We had a lot of different guys step up."

One of those guys was Long, who was 4 of 5 from three-point range and 2 of 2 from the free throw line en route to scoring 14 points.

With the game knotted at 54-all with 2:29 left to play, a three-pointer from the corner by Long gave the Tigers a lead they didn't relinquish.

A pair of free throws from Long with 15.1 seconds left gave Warsaw a 65-59 advantage.

"He's paid his dues," Ogle said of Long. "He's shot a lot of shots. He's not real size-imposing, but he's a gutty kid. He brings it every practice. He's a hard-working kid."

Other key contributers for Warsaw were junior Ryne Robinson, who scored 14 points, and sophomore Justin Clemens and junior Chase Byerly, who scored eight points each.

Sophomore Andy Conrad came off the bench to score six points.

"We had a lot of different guys step up," said Ogle. "This was our best game of the year."

It was also one of Northridge senior Brent Eaton's best games of the year.

But, as the old saying goes, a good team beats a great player.

The 6-5 Eaton, a four-year starter for the Raiders who will play on scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, led all scorers with 27 points.

He put his team on his back and tried to keep them in the game in the fourth, as he scored 12 points in the quarter.

Eaton finished the game 11 of 18 from the field, including a 3-of-5 effort from the three-point arc, and was 2 of 3 from the free throw line.

Troyer added 15 points for Northridge, while Luke Hofsommer chipped in with nine points.

The Tigers led 12-8 after one quarter of play, and the Raiders responded by opening the second quarter with a 10-2 run.

The scored was knotted at 27-all at halftime and Warsaw held a 42-39 advantage after three quarters of play.

Northridge never led in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders did make things interesting by tying the game six times in the final eight minutes of action.

"We're ahead of where I thought we'd be," Ogle said of his team, which has no seniors on the roster and had just one starter returing from last season's 11-10 team. "There were so many unknowns. Justin (Clemens) is our only starter back from last year, and Ryne Robinson is really the only other player that played varsity. Yeah, we're ahead of where I thought we'd be. We took a step forward tonight. We passed the litmus test."

The Tigers will try and win their seventh straight game tonight when they play at Fort Wayne South.
