Tigers Lose Pivotal Conference Match

They have to, however, back it up on the field.
That didn’t happen Thursday evening, as the Class 2A No. 6 Tigers fell 2-0 to visiting Northern Lakes Conference foe, and 17th-ranked, Goshen.
Two days after scoring in just over a minute of play and beating No. 15 Canterbury, the defending Class 1A state champion, Warsaw didn’t create a lot of opportunities against the Goshen Redskins.
“Over the last three years, we’ve had a lot of success,” said Bauer, who was denied his 200th career coaching win, as his team fell to 8-1-5 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play. “I don’t mind that they expect to win, but they have to back it up. There’s going to be teams like Goshen at the regional. I’d like another shot at them.”
The teams were scoreless at halftime, and the Redskins took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute when senior Geovanny Martinez put a shot past Warsaw junior keeper Peyton Long.
The Redskins added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when junior Jesus Dominguez put the ball in the back of the net past a diving Long.
“If we could get one (goal), I thought that would be enough because we’re pretty good defensively,” said Goshen coach Viratham Mounsithiraj. “One was plenty, but to walk out of here with a 2-0 win feels pretty good.”
A 2-0 win over last year’s Class 2A state runner-up wasn’t the only thing the Redskins left Warsaw with.
Improving to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the NLC, Goshen guaranteed itself at least a share of the conference crown.
“I told the guys ‘This is Warsaw, we have to play our best game,’” said Mounsithiraj. “I was proud of them. I think this is the best game we’ve played all year, defensively and offensively.”
In the 10 years Mounsithiraj has coached the Redskins, this is the first time they’ve defeated Warsaw.
“This is the best Goshen team I’ve seen,” said Bauer, who has coached the Tigers since 1999. “They’re athletic, fast, they pass well, they defend well. They’re easily the best team we’ve seen this season.”
The Tigers are in action Saturday at Kosciusko County, and NLC rival, Wawasee, and then close their conference schedule with a game Thursday at Northridge.
Goshen has just one conference game left, a date with Elkhart Memorial.
A win over the Crimson Chargers would give the Redskins their first outright conference title since 2000.
“I knew this would be the best team I’ve had in my 10 years, in terms of overall balance,” said Mounsithiraj. “This says a lot for our program. This is a big step for us.”
