COLUMBIA CITY - The Warsaw girls soccer team brought home a victory and moved one step closer to a sectional title after defeating Columbia City 2-1 Monday.

Columbia City scored the first point and took the initial lead with 26:46 left in the first half.

Columbia City's Rachel Peppler gained possession deep in her own territory and earned an assist on a breakaway pass. Kristen Davisson nailed the goal for the Eagles to put Columbia City up 1-0.

"We use the first half of the match to measure the other team and wear them down," said Warsaw coach Brent Wildman. "Our goal was to wear them down and take away their speed."

At the half, the score remained 1-0 in Columbia City's favor, but Warsaw was poised for a comeback.

While the first half of the game was characterized by many of short, quick passes, the pace of the game changed in the second half of the game. Fewer passes that covered a greater distance set the tone for the second half of the game.

"We can set our team for defense or for offense," said Wildman. "The team setup was different for the second half."

The Tigers came out of halftime ready to pounce. With 38:03 left in the second half, Chelsea Boyd passed the ball to Rachel Buhrt, and Warsaw had its first goal of the night.

Warsaw scored another goal with 20:57 left in the second half, but the goal was waved off because a Warsaw player was called for an offsides penalty.

The score remained tied at one until Rachel Buhrt scored her second goal of the night with 11:08 left in regulation play.

"Rachel had her best game of the season," said Wildman. "Every player stepped up tonight, we only had one sub in the game."

Although the Tigers came home with a 2-1 victory, they cannot allow themselves to relax.

"We need to work on a couple of things before Wednesday," said Wildman. "We didn't play defense in front of the goal very well tonight. We'll also need to work on our corner kicks."

The Tigers ended the regular season 11-3-2, and finished second in the NLC with a 5-1 record.
