Tigers Hope For NLC Tie
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
In topping Northern Lakes Conference rival Concord 15-6, 15-7 Thursday night, not only did Warsaw's volleyball team improve its conference mark to 5-1, but it may have become Concord's biggest cheerleader.
"We wish Concord the best of luck," Tiger coach Tanya Coon said.
Coon was saying this for one reason - Warsaw's only NLC loss came to Plymouth, the only undefeated team in NLC action. If Concord, 2-3 in conference play, can upset the Pilgrims at home Tuesday, the Tigers would have a share of the conference championship.
Thursday's win improved Warsaw's overall season record to 20-5; Concord falls to 13-14.
"The kids hustled well and played well as a team," Coon said. "We lost the long rallies, but we played good ball."
Concord junior April Lynn served up the first point of the first game, but Warsaw's Amie Poling, Mechelle Henderson, Andrea Saldivar, Nicole DeFord, Kara Kesler and Abby Sumpter combined service points to put the Tigers up 13-3. The Minutemen appeared to come to life, winning long rallies and scoring three more points before Tiger senior Lindsay Woods served up the game's final point.
Poling finished the evening with 13 digs and a pair of aces, while Saldivar added 14 digs and an ace. Sumpter finished with 29 assists, while Kesler added 12 kills and an ace.
Henderson served up three consecutive points in the second game to give the Tigers an 8-3 lead, but the feisty Minutemen came back and made it 9-7.
Coon said Warsaw's slow start in the second game was due to some lineup changes.
"In the second game," she said, "we made some changes in the lineup, but the people we made the changes with played well."
Coon was referring to seniors Erin Cook and Kyla Stanley and junior Ashley Hart.
Stanley finished the evening with five kills, while Hart served up the last three points of the second game.
Warsaw (20-5, 5-1 NLC) will play Clinton Prairie in the Clinton Prairie Invitational Saturday. Cowan and Triton will play in the other game.
