The Warsaw senior’s free throws with four seconds remaining, however, were big in securing a 42-38 win over the Pilgrims and guaranteed the Tigers at least a share of the conference championship.
Warsaw, now 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the NLC, can win the title outright Tuesday with a win over Northridge.
“Tim came off the bench cold,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team snapped a three-game losing streak to arguably its biggest rival. “There’s four seconds left and we’re up by two. If he misses, there’s a good chance Plymouth gets a rebound and has a chance to tie or win. I’m proud of Tim Swanson for making those free throws.”
The charity stripe was the Tigers’ only source of offense in the fourth quarter, an eight-minute period that started with Warsaw point guard Paul Marandet holding the ball near halfcourt for almost three minutes while the visitors held a 34-31 lead.
The Tigers, who were 2-5 in the NLC and 11-10 overall last season, went 8 of 8 at the free throw line in the final frame and 13 of 15 in the win.
“It was a grinder,” said Ogle, whose team’s chances of winning the NLC outright Thursday were thwarted when NorthWood’s Braxton Linville hit a trey at the buzzer to beat Elkhart Memorial and keep the Panthers’ hope of sharing the title alive.
“I’m proud of this team,” continued Ogle. “This is our second championship (to go along with winning the Warsaw Holiday Tournament). They continue to be an enjoyable group to coach because of their unselfish nature.”
Warsaw’s unselfish nature Thursday included assists on 10 of its 13 made field goals.
The Tigers only turned the ball over four times in the low-scoring, low-possession game.
Sophomore Kyle Mangas led Warsaw in scoring with 13 points, while senior Jake Mangas and Marandet scored eight points each and seniors Nick Sands and Rashaan Jackson chipped in with six and five points, respectively.
Marandet also filled the stat sheet with five rebounds and three assists.
Junior Josh Anders led Plymouth with a game-high 14 points, while senior Tyler England finished with seven points and senior Reis Yoder and sophomore Nick Felke added six points each.
With the loss, the Pilgrims fell to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in the NLC.
Plymouth led 13-11 after one quarter of play and 25-23 at halftime.
Despite the Pilgrims making 9 of 12 attempts from the field in the first half, including 4 of 6 from the arc, and all three of their free throw attempts, Ogle was happy his team only trailed by two points at the break.
“In the first half, Plymouth couldn’t have played much better than they did,” said Ogle, whose team was 8 of 19 from the field overall, including 3 of 8 from the arc, in the first half.
“They were 9 of 12 and 4 of 6 on threes,” continued Ogle. “I told the guys, ‘they’re only up two, and they should be worried.’ Our little push at the end of the first half, that was huge for our pysche.”
The teams were tied at 19-19 before Plymouth went on a 6-0 run. The Tigers responded with a pair of buckets by Marandet to close the opening half down by just two points.
Warsaw opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run, and the Pilgrims never led again, though they did cut the Tigers’ lead to 36-35 on Anders’ bucket with 1:08 remaining and to 40-38 when Anders hit a trio of free throws with five seconds left.
Plymouth scored just 13 points in the second half and made just 4 of 11 attempts from the field overall and was 0 of 4 from the arc after the intermission.
