Tigers Hold Off Hard-Charging Vikings
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
ROCHESTER - In the seminal film "Caddyshack", Ty Webb, played by Chevy Chase, tells caddy Danny Noonan to "be the ball."
Tuesday night at Mill Creek Golf Course in Rochester both Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley golf teams were definitely being the ball.
Warsaw needed two sub-40 rounds to hold off Valley and come away with a 171-176 win in the three-way match that included Wabash. The Apaches finished with a 229.
While Warsaw's Emily Johnson shot a 37, the real story for the Tigers was the play of senior Mallory Hepler. Hepler, playing out of the third spot, shot a 39, which was good for the third best score of the night.
Johnson was paired with Valley's Kara Kramer and Wabash's Heather Fox. Kramer pushed Johnson all afternoon and nearly had a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth. She would make the birdie putt from inside two feet. Kramer, who gave away a few shots during the match, still finished with a 38.
Valley's 176 was eight strokes lower than any round they've had this year and just five strokes above the school record of 171.
The Vikings had four golfers shoot under 48 for the first time all year, with Margaret Warren's 44, Allison Rock's 47 and Jenny Stiffler's 47 accompanying Kramer.
The improved play is all Valley coach and new member of the 300 win club Roger Moriarty could ask for.
"We're getting consistently better. To take it from 184 to 176 you're getting pretty competitive."
For Warsaw, being competitive has yielded a 5-0 record in match play thus far. The Tigers are consistently going deep into their JV roster to see what combinations work and depending on who's swinging the clubs well. Erica Schori came up from JV to shoot a 49, fourth on Warsaw behind Johnson, Hepler and Jessica Sadler's 46.
Having too many productive, Tiger coach Chris LaLonde can live with.
"It's just really good teamwork," said LaLonde. "They're playing really good as a team. They're practicing hard, so it's fun. I don't know who to play. I try to go with who's hot right now. I'm just looking for someone who can shoot consistently in the low 40's"
Valley will play tomorrow in the Rochester Invitational at Mill Creek at 7 a.m. The Tigers are in action Tuesday at Wawasee's home course of Maxwelton in a three-way match with Goshen. The starting tee time is set for 4:30 p.m.
