MARION -ÊThe matchup was supposed to be one of the best in the state: No. 9 (4A) Warsaw at No. 8 (4A) Marion in a battle of perennial powerhouses.

Warsaw started strong, but faded in the second, however, falling by what is believed to be its biggest loss of the decade 73-41.

Marion's Matt Backs started the game with a dunk as the Giants took a quick 4-1 lead, but Warsaw stepped up to the challenge as Ross Kesler nailed two baskets in 30 seconds to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead early in the first frame.

The Tigers then went on to build a 13-6 lead with two mintues left in the quarter, but Marion scored eight points in a row to take a 14-13 lead with eight seconds on the clock.

A Steve Siebenmorgen rebound basket at the buzzer gave Warsaw a 15-14 lead as the second quarter started.

"We came out strong in the first quarter, but we got into some early foul trouble," said Warsaw coach Al Rhodes.

"The first quarter, we seemed to have a lot of nervous energy," said Marion coach Moe Smedley.

Marion turned on the jets in the second quarter as they went on a 12-0 run in the first four minutes of play.

The Tigers went on to score just six points, all from free throws, in the remainder of the half to head to the lockers trailing by 12, 33-21.

The Giants started the third stanza just as they ended the second, netting two quick three-pointers and a layup to take a 20-point lead before the Tigers could score a basket.

Marion held Warsaw to nine points in the third and went into the fourth frame with a 51-30 lead over the Tigers.

"We got into a hole and were down by 12, but we thought we could break out of it," said Rhodes. "They came out in the third and hit two threes pretty quickly, and all of a sudden we were down by 18."

Warsaw kept up with the Marion scoring drive in the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Chris Wiggins' two free throws with 4:16 left to play would be the last time the Tigers would score as the Giants' defense kicked into full swing.

The Giants held the Tigers scoreless for more than four minutes as they went on a 13-0 run to finish the game with a 73-41 victory.

"I think our quickness helped us a great deal tonight," said Smedley. "We were down early, but we were able to come back and play our game in the second half and get the win."

"Marion outplayed us in all three areas of the basketball game tonight," said Rhodes. "They beat us in rebounding, offense, and defense.

"I give all the credit in the world to Marion, they came out and just manhandled us pretty well," said Rhodes.

Warsaw held the Giants' big man, 6-8 Zach Randolph to just 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals, but the remainder of the Marion squad picked up the slack to earn the victory.

"They did a good job on Zach (Randolph) tonight," said Smedley. "Warsaw did a good job defending him."

Wiggins led the Tigers with 15 points, and Siebenmorgen added 12 points and eight rebounds to the Warsaw effort.

The Tigers, now 12-2, host Elkhart Memorial tonight in the Tiger Den.
