Tigers Hang On, Win Finale At Carroll
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
FORT WAYNE - Much like the season itself has been, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball game at Carroll Friday was a bit of a rollercoaster.
A contest filled with its share of ups and downs, the Tigers held the host Chargers to one point in the first quarter, yet held their collective breath as junior Zach Taylor's three-point attempt from the opposite free throw line rattled out at the buzzer.
Warsaw, which held a 10-point advantage after the first quarter and held a 10-point advantage with 5:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, escaped Carroll High School with a 49-47 win in the regular season finale for both teams.
"We needed to win a game like this," said fourth-year Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team was 7-5 but won just two of its final eight regular season games. "It makes for a better week of practice. This will help us confidence wise and in terms of our enthusiasm and energy."
The two-point win improved Warsaw to 9-11 on the season, while Carroll fell to 8-12.
Both teams play next week in the Class 4A East Noble Sectional. Carroll plays Columbia City Tuesday at 7 p.m., while the Tigers battle the host Knights at 6 p.m. Friday.
Trailing 40-30 in the fourth quarter, Carroll went on a 17-7 run to knot the game at 47-all with Taylor's three-pointer with 10 seconds left.
Warsaw senior Colin Clemens was fouled with 1.4 seconds remaining and hit both charity tosses to account for the final score of the game.
Carroll inbounded the ball after Clemens' free throws, and Taylor's long three-pointer rattled out of the hoop as the buzzer sounded.
"I'm happy we got the opportunity to shoot those free throws," said Ogle when asked how much confidence he had when his senior stepped to the charity stripe with the game on the line. "I'm proud of Colin. He made 8 of 10 free throws tonight after he didn't do so well against Huntington North."
The Tigers finished the game 15 of 38 (39.5 percent) from the floor and 17 of 22 from the free throw line. Carroll ended the contest 15 of 34 (44.1 percent) from the floor and 14 of 18 from the free throw line.
There were 38 fouls called in the game.
While Carroll honored its seniors prior to the start of the game, it was Warsaw's seniors that came through in the second half.
Of the Tigers' 33 points in the third and fourth quarters, 31 of them were scored by seniors.
"I thought that Shaun Cabrera was outstanding in the second half," Ogle said of his senior point guard, who finished the game 6 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line for a game-high 17 points. "It was fitting that Shaun Cabrera made the last play to get Colin Clemens the ball, and that Colin made the free throws in a pressure-packed situation. Our seniors did a great job in the second half."
To go with Cabrera's 17 points, nine of which came in the third quarter, the Tigers got 13 points and five rebounds from Clemens.
Senior John-Wesley Maierle and classmate Mitch Reinholt scored six and five points, respectively, while junior Tommy Reinholt scored four points and junior Miles Plumlee and freshman brother Mason Plumlee scored two points each.
With first-year coach Marty Beasly altering his starting lineup to honor his seniors, the Tigers led 11-1 at the end of the first quarter. Carroll held Warsaw to five points in the second quarter and trailed the low-scoring affair 16-14 at halftime.
"They started three guys that don't normally play that much," said Ogle. "We got off to an early lead, but Carroll hung in there. They're a lot like us. They came into the game 8-11 and have lost some close games lately."
The Chargers have lost six of their last seven games. Four of those losses came by a combined 13 points.
Junior Jared Miller led Carroll with 14 points, while Taylor added 11 points, John Wright hit three three-pointers for nine points and Durane Harris came off the bench to score seven points.
