FRANKLIN - Sitting at a picnic table in a pavillion on the grounds at Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, second-year Warsaw coach Ben Barkey's three-word answer could have been both serious and humorous.

"Anything can happen," Barkey said of Wednesday's second round of the 68th annual IHSAA boys golf state finals.

It was one of those kind of days, where if one is to expect anything it should be the unexpected.

Heavy rain storms delayed Wednesday's final round six hours, with Warsaw teeing off at 2 p.m. rather than 8 a.m. A total of nine teams, a trio of threesomes, competed in Wednesday's second round.

Second-ranked Zionsville entered the day as the leader after posting a 292 Tuesday, followed by defeneding state champion and top-ranked Richmond six strokes back and Concord and Warsaw nine strokes back.

As 13th-ranked Warsaw's group, which included No. 6 Indianapolis Roncalli and Columbus North, approached the final five holes play was suspended as gray skies and lightning moved in over the course.

The same thing happened during Tuesday's first round, forcing a 45-minute stoppage in play.

After nearly a half-hour delay Wednesday, the players returned to the course, only for heavy rain showers to suspend play until this morning.

Wanting to get the second round finished yesterday, tournament officials allowed play to resume for a short time during a driving rain storm.

But it was to no avail, and play was once again suspended just after 7 p.m. with the final threesome, which teed off at 2:45 p.m., with five holes still to play.

"It's bizarre," Barkey said of the quickly-changing weather conditions the teams faced at the state finals. "It's hard but you've got to keep pushing and grind it out. You've got to work hard and not give up."

As play was suspended Wednesday, the Tigers had three scores turned in, senior Ben Brodhead's 84, junior Jon Clevenger's 84 and freshman Grant Slater's 71.

Upon finishing his round, Clevenger once again gave the crowd watching him something to cheer about.

Tuesday it was a hole-in-one on the 159-yard, par 3 No. 13. Wednesday he drew great applause when after finishing his round in heavy rains that quickly covered the greens threw his ball high into the air and into a nearby pond.

The same pond that at least one individual decided to take a quick swim in as players continued to be ushered off the course.

Junior Chris Hanson finished his round this morning, finishing with a 73, while junior Jake Brodhead finished this morning with a 77.

All totaled, the Tigers shot a 305 on the second day for a two-day score of 606, which left Warsaw with a third-place finish.

Zionsville finished its round today and turned in a second-round score of 301 for a two-day total of 593 that won the state championship. Richmond shot a 302 the second round for a two-day total of 600.

Columbus North (609), Concord (610), Roncalli (612), Floyd Central (621), Michigan City (621) and Culver Military Academy (633) rounded out the teams that played the second round.

Zionsville senior James Sacheck, who shot a 68 during the first round of competition, shot a 72 during the second round for a two-day total of 140, winning the individual state championship. Brownstown Central's Chris Baker, the defending individual state champion, was second with a 141.

Hanson led Warsaw with a two-day total of 148, followed by Slater (151), Jake Brodhead (155), Clevenger (156) and Ben Brodhead (160).

"If you had told me before the tournament we'd shoot around 605, we wouldn't want it," said Barkey. "With the conditions, it's not that bad. We wanted to get under 600. A 599 would have been perfect. It was just a frustrating two days. The weather really made things frustrating."

Warsaw, which was the only program in the state to have both their boys and girls golf teams playing the second day of the state finals, returns four of its top five golfers for next year.
