Tigers Finish Regular Season With Ugly Win

Putting it in baseball terms, Doug Ogle said he was looking for base hits Friday night. His Warsaw boys basketball team, however, went for the home run and nearly struck out.

Three nights after an impressive come-from-behind win at Kokomo, the Tigers played what Ogle called selfish basketball, and a 15-point lead late in the third quarter turned into shooting free throws to pull out a 50-46 win.

"We weren't patient enough on offense, we had too many miscues by several players," Ogle said. "We had too many guys going for home runs when we should have been looking for singles and doubles. We took some bad shots, I didn't think our shot selection was that good in the first half. We had too many players that instead of making the routine play tried to thread the needle and make a spectacular pass."

This threading the needle, as Ogle called it, tore Warsaw's offense apart at the seams and was responsible for a majority of the Tiger's 20 turnovers.

Leading by nine after three quarters, the Tigers hit just one field goal the entire fourth quarter, leaving junior Ryan Schultz to bail them out at the free throw line.

The 6-foot junior made good on 6 of 8 free throw attempts in the fourth, including the front end of a double-bonus to give Warsaw the 50-46 lead with 6.6 seconds left.

Though Schultz' free throw shooting was key down the stretch, the Tigers finished 17 of 29 at the stripe for the game. Carroll was a dismal 9 of 21 from the free throw line

"I'm very proud of Ryan Schultz' play," Ogle said. "I thought he was steady at the free throw line. We just weren't consistent when we had a big lead or were in control. We hit our free throws in the fourth quarter and they didn't. I don't think it would have been disasterous if we lost this game. I told the kids before the game if we lost it didn't have anything to do with Columbia City on Tuesday (in the sectionals). I thought we could lose this game."

Ogle's thoughts nearly became reality as Carroll cut Warsaw's advantage to 43-41 when 6-4 junior center John Bates converted a pair of free throws. The Tigers then turned the ball right back to the Chargers on a five-second call, but hitting just 8 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter didn't help Carroll.

"Neither team shot very well from the free throw line," Ogle said. "I just thought we backslid tonight in terms of toughness and unselfishness. There was a lot of selfish play tonight and that's disapointing."

Though Ogle described it as an "ugly win", the four-point victory improved Warsaw to 14-6 on the season as the Tigers picked up their ninth win in 10 games. Carroll, winners in just two of its last six games, fell to 9-11.

Warsaw took a 15-point at 39-24 lead when sophomore point guard Michael Moore hit 1 of 2 free throws after Carroll coach Rob Irwin was called for a technical foul with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter.

A 17-4 run by the visiting Chargers cut the lead to two, 43-41, when Bates hit a pair of free throws midway through the fourth.

Following a junior varsity game that was lengthened by two overtimes, Warsaw and Carroll extended the night cap by committing a combined 44 fouls.

"It was ugly, neither team played very well," Ogle said. "At this point we're only gonna look at it a little bit and move forward."

Seniors Ryan DeGeeter and Erik Fussle paced the Tigers with 12 points each, while Schultz added eight and Todd Braddock and Moore five each.

Senior Seth Lochmueller led Carroll with a game-high 15, while teammates Tyler Oyer and Bates scored eight each.

Both Carroll and Warsaw are in action again Tuesday in the Warsaw Sectional, with Carroll playing Wawasee at 6 p.m and the Tigers battling No. 4 Columbia City at 8 p.m.
