NORTH MANCHESTER - After winning the regional competition, the Warsaw girls cross country team wore sweatshirts donated by their booster club to the semistate competition. Across the back, the shirt read, "We were surprised too! See you at state!"

Although the prediction on the back of the shirt did not pan out, the Warsaw girls placed 11th of 20 teams in a competition they were not expected to run in.

"This is such a great experience," said Sibray. "Just to be here, to get this far is a great step for us. It's a reflection of how the girls put in extra time this summer.

"It's been a terrific season. It's been good from the beginning."

With black and orange pawprints scattered on the faces of runners and fans alike, the Warsaw girls lined up for their first semistate competiton since 1990.

After the dust settled and the runners caught their breath, the Warsaw girls had finished 11th in the competition.

Although the girls did not advance to the state cross country competition, they were proud of themselves for competing well.

"The girls have been great," said Sibray. "Five of the seven runners had personal records today, they ran super races."

Summer Boyd finished first for the Tigers, placing 37th out of 155 runners with a time of 15:19.

Jennifer Finch crossed the finish line in 15:32 to place 48th overall and second for the Tigers.

Warsaw's third finisher, Melonie Albert, placed 57th overall with a time of 15:44. Hillary Barlow finished fourth for the Tigers with a 78th-place time of 16:06.

Amy Robertson, Abbie SImmons and Kim Fluke finished 105th, 119th and 141st to round out the Tiger seven.

Sibray believed that many factors have contributed to this year's success, but one sticks out in his mind.

"Everyone on the team has a great attitude," said Sibray. "This is a great group of girls."

Chip Shots: How Callous IS It?
For every 700 to 1,000 words of mine you read on any given Saturday, I have a list of callous, cynical thoughts and remarks I can make about the topics I discuss… easily five-fold of what I allow past my filter and, in turn, e-mail to my editor.
