Tigers Edge Triton For Sectional Title

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Triton High School senior Ryan Rapp won the battle. The Warsaw Tigers won the war.
And for the third-straight season, it came right down to the bitter end.
With a four-man score of 314, the 10th-ranked Warsaw Tigers rallied on the back nine and won Friday’s boys golf sectional at Stonehenge – edging the Triton Trojans boy one stroke.
Rapp was the individual champion with a 3-under 68, while teammate Quentyn Carpenter’s 72 was the third-best score of the day.
The Tigers’ 1-stroke sectional victory came a  year after beating the Trojans on a fifth-man tiebreaker.
Two years ago, Triton won its only sectional title by beating Warsaw on a fifth-man score.
“Winning is great, but one of the best things about high school sports is a competitive rivalry,” said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey, whose team was led by Jon Schram’s 76. “For a long time, it was that way with Wawasee....that’s the way it was when I took the job. Now, we have a great rivalry with Triton. It puts it in perspective what (coach) Jack (Carpenter) has done at Triton, and what his nephew T.J. and his sons (Quentyn & Griffyn) have done for Triton.”
The top three three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, qualified for Thursday’s regional at Stonehenge.
Columbia City finished third with a 319, while Culver Military Academy (328), Plymouth (330), Huntington North (338), Northfield (348), Whitko (350), Tippecanoe Valley (356), Lakeland Christian Academy (396), Churubusco (399), Manchester (417) and Culver Community (444) rounded out the 13-team field.
CMA’s Ben Sharff (74) and Plymouth teammates Nate Kolter (78) and Ben Schenk (80) advanced to the regional as individuals.
After nine holes, Triton led the way with a 157, while Columbia City was at 162 and Warsaw and CMA were at 166.
While Triton coach Jack Carpenter is grateful his team advanced, there was certainly some didappointment about coming so close to winning the sectional for the second time in three years.
“We handed it to them,” said Triton’s long-time coach. “Our No. 3, 4 and 5 guys didn’t play they way they’re capable of on the back nine, and Warsaw came back on a course they’re very familiar with. We were in a great position at the turn. The good new is, we get to play again Thursday.”
Rapp’s 68, which consisted of 34s on the front and back sides, was three strokes better than runner-up Tyler Green of Columbia City.
“My top two players, I’d put them up against anybody in the state,” said Carpenter. “Ryan isn’t really in Quentyn’s shadow. He’s actually been our best golfer the last half of the season. They both have a great competitve spirit and they push each other. They’re great leaders for our team.”
Also for Triton, Lucas Shafer and Tanner Shepherd shot 87 and 88, respectively, while Greg Music carded a 95.
To go with Schram’s 76, Warsaw got 79s from Jonny Hollar and Evan Cultice, an 80 from Will Petro and an 84 from Tim Ahlersmeyer.
Barkey has preached the importance of 18-hole tournaments, as opposed to the nine-hole matches that make up the conference season.
Barkey also raves about his players having a team GPA over 12.0.
The Tigers’ mental toughness was certainly evident on the back nine.
A perfect example was Hollar’s round.
The talented sophomore was 6-over after three holes. He played the next 15 holes 2-over.
“I can’t say enough about these guys,” Barkey said of his players. “We’ve got to get off to a better start, but I know my guys are going to pick it up on the back. They don’t get down. They stay with it.”
Of the four players that accounted for the Tigers’ team score, all shot a better score on the back than the front.
Ahlersmeyer’s 84 included a 42 on both sides.
“I’m blessed with mentally strong kids,” said Barkey. “I have great kids, great parents, great administrators at the school, a great community behind us. I’m very blessed as a coach.”
Friday’s victory gave the Tigers 26 sectional championships in the boys golf program’s rich history, including four in the past five seasons.
“I’m standing on the shoulders of giants,” said a humbled Barkey. “This all started with (former coaches) Joe Harris and Bob Turner. You can’t put into words what they did for the Warsaw golf program, and now I’m just maintaining it.”
A top three finish in next week’s regional would advance the Tigers to the state finals for eighth time in 11 seasons under Barkey’s guidance.
Bryce Zimpleman led Tippecanoe Valley with an 81, while Tanner Neeley shot an 83 for the Vikings.
Daniel Zawlocki fired and 84 for Whitko, while Ross Wallin carded an 88 for LCA and Connor Eichenauer turned in an 89 for Manchester.
