Tigers Close In On Undefeated Season
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
After Thursday's golf match ended, Warsaw senior Kerri Wrobel approached coach Bob Turner and said Warsaw's new record out loud: "14-0."
Any concerns about unlucky 13 derailing a perfect season vanished as Warsaw shot better than its team average in beating Manchester. Warsaw typically shoots around 184 or 185, but the Tigers downed Manchester 182-198 at Rozella Ford. Manchester dropped to 11-7.
Warsaw senior Kerri Wrobel won medalist honors with a seven-over-par 42, and senior Jaci Thallemer, golfing in the fourth spot in the lineup, added a 43. Wrobel hit long, straight tee shots that nearly always stayed on the fairway. Thallemer was consistent, recording either fours or fives on all nine holes.
"Jaci Thallemer had one of her better scores this year and her best score on this course," Turner said.
The course played rough as fast greens wreaked havoc on more than a few putts. But Turner just asks his team to shoot 185 each match, so to shoot 182, the putting problems did not hurt the Tigers too much.
"The thing I'm concerned about is our team average staying consistent, which it did tonight," Turner said. "If we shoot a 185 Saturday, I'll take it and run."
Also for Warsaw, senior Lara Reed shot 47, sophomore Erin Elliott 50 and junior Katie Manning 53. Dorey Bungitak and Alexis Leininger paced Manchester with 45s. Miriel Speicher shot 53, Lindsey Music 55 and Christina Evans 81.
The march toward Warsaw's first undefeated season in girls golf history continues. The Tigers went 6-0 to win the Northern Lakes Conference outright for the first time. Warsaw last shared the title in 1995 with Goshen. Girls golf in the NLC began in 1994.
"The best teams I've had all had two or three losses," Turner said.
To finish undefeated, Warsaw must win at Culver Girls Academy on Tuesday then beat West Noble in a Thursday home match.
"Being 14-0 is a very pleasant surprise, especially being 6-0 in the conference," Turner said. "Our three seniors have stepped it up to the next level, beaten people and teams this year we normally haven't beaten. That sets us up nicely for the conference tournament and the postseason.
"It's always in the back of my mind: What can the seniors do for you? We saw last year what they could do for the football team. Now they are showing us how we can succeed when they come through."
They showed they are good enough to have Warsaw at 14-0.
Now they have Warsaw in position to record the first undefeated season in school history.
