Tigers Clip Eagles In Double-Overtime Thriller

COLUMBIA CITY – Though it was just the second game of the season, Saturday's high school boys basketball clash between U.S. 30 rivals Warsaw and Columbia City definitely had a state tournament atmosphere.
Following a double-overtime JV game, the Tigers and host Eagles battled through two extra sessions in the varsity contest.
There were 12 ties and 12 lead changes, and when all was said and done, Warsaw left Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium with a thrilling 52-51 win over Class 4A No. 11 Columbia City.
“I'm just proud of how our guys hung in there,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team rallied from a 10-point, third-quarter deficit. “I'm really proud of them. That's a lot of length, and the Hazen brothers are athletic and they've gotten a lot more aggressive. We just battled. We just kept battling. This a big win for our guys.”
In Wednesday's season opener, the Tigers had a definite height advantage in a 60-35 win at Tippecanoe Valley.
The matchups with Columbia City were a different story altogther, as the Eagles' strength was the play of 6-foot-8 senior Brachen Hazen and 6-7 junior Parker Hazen.
Brachen Hazen led Columbia City with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Parker Hazen chipped in with 10 points, four boards, three assists and a steal.
The difference in the game was the solid play of Warsaw guards Kyle Mangas and Paul Marandet, as well as a steal by junior Jaceb Burish that sealed the deal in the waning seconds of the second overtime period.
Mangas led the way with a game-high 26 points, including a thunderous dunk in the third quarter that cut the Eagles' advantage to 31-28 after the Tigers had trailed 29-19.
Marandet finished with nine points, five assists and four steals, and Burish came off the bench to score seven points to go along with his big takeaway.
“Kyle Mangas and Paul Marandet played well, and Jaceb Burish off the bench was unbelievable,” said Ogle. “I just can not say enough about Jaceb Burish in this game tonight. And then Paul, he made that save at the end and we got the ball, and he got fouled and we were finally able to make a couple free throws.
“Paul and Kyle, they were both playmakers. I'm just really proud of how our guys hung in there.”
Junior Jeremy David, who along with Burish and junior Braxton Minix had the daunting task of trying to defend the Hazens, finished with seven points, four rebounds and three steals.
Columbia City led 13-11 after one quarter of play, 20-19 at halftime, 31-30 at the end of the third quarter and 41-41 at the end of regulation.
The teams were then tied 47-47 after the first four-minute overtime, as Mangas made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to keep the Tigers’ hope alive.
With Warsaw trailing 51-50 in the second overtime, Mangas missed a pair of charity tosses with 56 remaining.
Brachen Hazen grabbed the rebound on the second miss, but the Eagles turned the ball over with 46 seconds left.
With 28 seconds on the clock, Marandet made two free throws, accounting for the final score.
The Eagles, whose roster includes 11 seniors, then had a chance to win the game, but Burish capped off his impressive performance off the bench with a steal, and Warsaw ran the final few seconds off the clock.
“A win like this says we’re ready for anything,” said Mangas. “People said we were inexperienced, we only had two returning varsity players, but everyone is stepping up and things are going in the right direction.”
The Tigers, now 2-0 on the season, have a pair of home games this week, hosting Homestead Friday and Huntington North Saturday.
The Eagles, who fell to 1-1, play at Fort Wayne Northrop Thursday.
