Warsaw welcomed Elkhart Memorial to the Northern Lakes Conference by handing the Chargers a narrow 37-34 Tuesday defeat.

This was the first wrestling meet in the NLC for Memorial, as the school is being added as the eighth team in the conference. The Chargers had been in the Northern Indiana Conference since 1972, with Penn, Mishawaka, Elkhart Central and five South Bend Schools - Adams, Clay, LaSalle, Riley, and Washington.

Memorial coach Brian Seltzer said he felt good about his young team coming into their first competition of the season.

"We've had good practices," said Seltzer, "and I feel like we are right on track."

The Chargers' varsity roster included four freshmen and four sophomores, all of whom showed a good strength and athleticism.

Elkhart jumped out to a 12-0 lead with pins at 103 pounds and 112, but the Tigers answered back when Anthony Boley (119) worked a pin in 4:21 against Nick Duley.

The teams traded pins again as Warsaw's Tanner Connealy (125) was headlocked by Jeremy Hostetler in 1:08, but then Warsaw freshman Kyle Boley (130) nailed junior Robbie Head in 1:07, leaving Memorial ahead 18-12.

Adam Bott (135) drew the Tigers closer, man-handling Aaron Johnson for a 13-5 major decision to add four points to the team score. John Milton (140) battled against Tom Iannarelli, losing a 7-4 decision.

David Sumpter (145) faced Grant Woodka, who two years ago took fifth in the state championship. Sumpter fought his way out of three pinning predicaments but finally succumbed in the third period at 4:15.

The next three matches were victories for the Tigers and gave them a lead in the team points that would not be relinquished the rest of the night. Nick McKinley (152) cradled up Josh New at 5:06, and then Nate Milton (160) hung on for a 7-4 victory over Dan Kratzer. Warsaw senior Richard Wolfe (171) overpowered Jeremiah Swartzell with a cradle in the first period, but time ran out. In the second period Swartzell escaped to a neutral position, but Wolfe quickly crunched him to the mat and scored the fall at 4:20 to give the Tigers a 31-27 lead.

Warsaw's Tyler Miller lost a tough 6-4 decision to Steve McCarty before senior Kris Hueber came on to seal the win for the Tigers.

He calmly scored two takedowns and two three-point nearfalls against Sam Mayo in the first period to go on top 10-1.

In the second period Hueber methodically worked the pin at 3:48 to put the team score out of reach at 37-30.

At 275 pounds, Warsaw's David Ferguson lost to Nathan Warner 6-4 on a reversal of control in the closing seconds of the match.

Warsaw coach Tony Boley was happy with some of the aggressiveness of his team but said, "At times we had no guts. We need to come together as a team and gut it out. We had some huge matches that helped us, but we had some that killed us. We have a long way to go, but we will get better every day."

In junior varsity exhibition competition three Tigers scored victories: Troy Miller, Jeff Hunter and Jacob Boots.

The varsity Tigers are 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in the NLC.
