KENDALLVILLE - Warsaw girls golf coach Chris LaLonde knew what her team needed to do Saturday in the regional. She predicted it a week ago after winning the sectional at Stonehenge Golf Club.

She was right, and on a record-setting day at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville, the Tigers got it done.

Shooting a four-person team score of 326, Warsaw finished second in the nine-team regional field and advanced to state for the third consecutive year.

"I said it would take a 330 or better to get out after we won the sectional and it did," said LaLonde. "I think it'll be the same thing at state. We just need to play a solid round of golf and stay consistent."

The top three teams from Saturday's regional advanced to Friday's first round of the state finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin. The top nine teams, as well as those teams within 12 strokes of the leader will advance to the second day of the state finals. The top nine individuals, as well as those within four strokes of the leader, also advance to the second round.

DeKalb, which played in the final threesome at the regional with Warsaw and Homestead, won the regional championship with a score of 319.

Following the Barons were Warsaw (326), Homestead (328), Concordia (338), Norwell (341), Northridge (347), East Noble (350), Fort Wayne Snider (360) and Goshen (363).

"It's really exciting," LaLonde said of advancing to state for the third consecutive year. "These girls are great to be around. They have a lot of excitement about the game of golf."

Saturday's runner-up finish, which came after winning the sectional championship on its home course last Saturday, made the girls golf program the only team sport in Warsaw Community High School history to advance to state three consecutive years.

The Tiger boys team, which has advanced to state the past two years, won the 2005 state championship. LaLonde said golf is an exciting thing at WCHS right now.

"There's a really good group of kids coming through right now," said LaLonde, whose team went 11-2 in the regular season and 6-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference. "Golf is a family sport. You can go out and play with businesses, with your family, and I think that has a lot to do with it. A lot of these kids have families who play golf."

Leading the way for the Tigers Saturday was junior Emily Johnson, who as a freshman became the youngest person in state history to win the individual state championship. Johnson led the way with a three-over round of 74.

Johnson shot back-to-back nine-hole rounds of 74. She made par on 15 holes and bogeyed holes Nos. 2, 4 and 11.

"Emily played a really solid round," said LaLonde. "She struggled with her putter, but she was steady and didn't lose it. Elena Duncan came through for us. She had trouble on a couple holes on the backside, but the next couple holes she played great. Megan Krizmanich was solid and we got consistency again from the Manning girls."

To go with Johnson's 74, the Tigers got a 79 from Duncan, an 82 from Krizmanich and 91s from twins Laura and Jenny Manning.

DeKalb's Jennifer Nagel and Bishop Dwenger's Sarah Prascsak turned in the best individual scores of the day, with both carding a 71. Nagel became the individual regional champion after winning a one-hole playoff.

Concord's Jessica Dooley and Northridge's Lyndsay McBride both shot 71.

Prascsak, Dooley and McBride will compete as state as individuals.

Wawasee's Jessica Rondeau competed as an individual in Saturday's regional, but shot an 86 and didn't qualify for state.
