The Warsaw Tigers honored their volleyball seniors Monday night.
Those seniors responded by guiding Warsaw to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 win over Kosciusko County rival Tippecanoe Valley in both teams' regular season finale.
Senior Danielle DeGeeter led Warsaw with 14 assists and also had five kills, 10 digs and six serving points.
Along with DeGeeter, Kacie Conley, Selina Long, Jill Kreinbrink and Kate Miller were recognized before the match started.
Miller had five assists and led the Tigers with 10 blocks.
Kreinbrink had a block and a serving point while Long had a team-high 13 digs.
Conley had four digs in her final match in the Tiger Den.
Warsaw got off to a fast start in the first game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Vikings battled back on the strength of a great dig that earned a point from junior Chelsea Eaton.
The Tigers then created a cushion for themselves after an 8-1 run that gave them a 12-6 lead. Warsaw closed out the match with its final two points coming on a DeGeeter ace and a service fault by Valley.
In the second game, Warsaw took longer to pull away from Valley. The Vikings held a 10-9 lead at one point before the Tigers went on a 6-1 run to steal the lead away from Valley.
Miller closed out the second game and gave Warsaw a 25-19 win with a powerful serve that the Vikings couldn't return.
Warsaw appeared in control for most of the third game, jumping out to a 21-12 lead before Valley coach Jon Hutton called a timeout.
The Vikings got a spark from freshman Hannah Boggs, who served seven straight points for Valley to put her team within four points at 24-20. The match ended on a Boggs service fault.
While the Vikings fell in three games, Hutton feels good about his team heading into postseason play.
"I think we had more touches than (Warsaw) thought we would have," said Hutton. "Warsaw is a very smooth team and coach (Doug) West is a knowledgable coach. I think our kids played at a good pace and that maybe Warsaw didn't take us as seriously. And if you looked at our record, I wouldn't take us too seriously, either. But we look forward to sectional. We have Peru. We've seen Peru and think we match up with them very well."
The Vikings ended the regular season with a 12-19 record overall. Valley takes on Peru in the first round of sectional play Thursday at Fort Wayne Elmhurst.
As for the Tigers, West was impressed with the intensity both teams brought to Monday's match.
"It's a great match for both teams to go into sectional," said West. (Valley) was scrappy. Both teams showed a lot of spirit and a lot of enthusiasm. Valley was scrappy and tried to mount a comeback in that third game."
West also acknowledged the efforts of his seniors.
"A lot of the success we've had this year is because of the poise and maturity of our seniors," said West. "This is a neat team to coach and we have a neat group of seniors. They all have specific roles on this team and they all play them."
Warsaw moved to 24-9 overall. The Tigers are in action again Saturday at 11 a.m. against DeKalb in the Columbia City Sectional.
