SYRACUSE - The electricty was in the air Thursday night as Warsaw and Wawasee faced off on the hardwood tepee at Wawasee high school. That was until the third game, with Wawasee leading 12-11 when the lights went out for a few seconds after a car accident knocked out the power in the area.
Both teams continued to play the point as the ball fell on Warsaw's side of the net, but the point would be replayed.
Any momentum garnered to that point was gone. Warsaw was able to regain its composure and came back to win the third game along with match, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24.
Wawasee looked to push the matters to a fifth and final game, as the Warriors clung to a 21-17 lead in the fourth game.
Two strong serves by Cheryle Thomas and poor returning by Tigers left Wawasee four points shy of tying the match at two games.
Warsaw's Kim Clay tied the match at 21-21 with an ace. At that point, a dejected Wawasee coach Amy Miller called a timeout.
"I told them what they'd had already heard. We have to pass the ball. We have to be able to move our middles and make a run so we could open the outside and put the ball away. We just weren't getting passes where we needed to," said Miller.
With Wawasee's Andra Aaron serving for the match at 24-23, a Danielle DeGeeter spike knotted things up at 24-24.
Warsaw was able to ride two serves by Noelle Scrafton to the match-clinching win, 26-24.
A conference road win against a team like Wawasee was enough to put Warsaw coach Doug West in a good mood.
"I'm real happy to close out a fourth game like that, to win a two-point fourth game against a very experienced team.
They started six seniors and they had a pretty strong block. When we were in system, I felt like we attacked well. I thought we had some nice serving at the end of each game and put some pressure on them serving consistently and strong," said West.
In fact, the Tigers served for three aces in the final game while the Warriors committed three service errors. Early on, however, it was Warsaw having problems serving and defending the serve.
Eight of Wawasee's first 16 points in the fourth game came from either an ace or a service error by Warsaw. The resolute Tigers were able to battle and didn't allow either the rest of the decisive fourth game.
The Warriors won the first game in convincing fashion that belied the 25-20 score. Wawasee's front line of Jessie Wolf, Jen Minear and Kasey Bollier dominated the Tigers by stopping a Warsaw attack.
Warsaw turned things around in the second game and cruised to a 25-20 lead of its own. The Tigers led by as much as 18-11 before the Warriors made a run. Wawasee drew as close as 20-18 before an Aaron service error and a Mayer ace sealed the deal for the Tigers.
During the heated third game, after the power was restored, neither team could get into a flow. The two squads traded points back and forth before Warsaw charged ahead with a four-point run that included an ace by Rebekah Reichard. DeGeeter ended the third game with a tip that went past Aaron.
Aaron did lead the Warriors with 14 digs, while Bollier had 24 assists and 10 digs of her own.
Warsaw was led in service points by Mayer with 11. Julie Seiss led the Tigers in kills and blocks with nine and four, respectively.
The win moves Warsaw's record to 13-7 overall and 4-1 in the NLC. Warsaw hosts the Tiger Invitational Saturday. Wawasee's record drops to 17-6 overall and 2-2 in the NLC. The Warriors take part in the Homestead Invitational Saturday.
