Tiger Track Team Rolls Over NorthWood

The rain may have held off until Tuesday night's Warsaw/NorthWood boys track meet was in the books, but during the competition, the Tigers continued to reign over the opposition.
Warsaw did away with the Panthers 80-52 to move its season record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference. NorthWood fell to 3-1 and 1-1 in the NLC.
The Tigers placed first in 11 of the 16 events, including both throwing events and all three relays.
Warsaw sophomore Jarod Leasure took top honors in the discus with his throw of 145 feet, 7 inches. Leasure had nearly 6 feet of cushion between him and second-place finisher Andy Mitschelen of NorthWood. Warsaw's Ryan Brennan came in third with a throw of 135 feet.
"He (Leasure) threw 146 feet at Penn," said Warsaw throwing coach Gary Fribley. "He's struggled the last couple week, but hopefully he gets it back. He still hasn't thrown what he has in practice."
The Tigers swept the shot put event with Wes Rodman, Marvin Farmer and Leasure placing first, second and third respectively. Rodman tossed the 12-pound ball 50-9 1/2 to take top honors. Warsaw took five of six places in the two throwing events.
"We got some consistency," said Fribley. "I told them to get more consistent. Rodman set the tone early and brought the other two with him and everybody else got excited. Anytime a sophomore throws 48-feet you have to be happy."
Warsaw got 15 of their 82 total points from the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays. The Tigers won the 3200 with nearly a 60 second cushion and put four seconds between them and the Panthers in the 1600 relay.
NorthWood's best events proved to be the hurdle events. The Panthers swept the 110 high hurdles with Jon Cook taking top honors with a time of 15 seconds flat. Matt Traub and Bill Mitschelen finished second and third respectively. Cook and Traub placed first and second respectively in the 300 hurdles as well.
The biggest loss of the evening for the Tigers was probably that of senior Jon Hill. Hill pulled a hamstring out of the starting blocks and Warsaw coach Troy Akers was uncertain of the seriousness of the condition at the time.
"Right out of the start in the first 15 meters he pulled a hamstring," said Akers. "It's one of those nagging injuries that's more likely to happen. It probably occurs more often. This was a night made for something like this to happen the way it cooled off. What it means is that everybody has to step up. In this meet they have but to win the NLC everyone has to step up. The field events and distance kids came through toninght."
Warsaw (4-0) will be in action again Thursday at Columbia City at 4:30 p.m. NorthWood's next competition will be Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Goshen Relays. Thursday's meet with LaVille has been postponed. [[In-content Ad]]
