MENTONE -ÊWarsaw defeated Tippecanoe Valley in both girls and boys swimming Monday, but the coaches from both teams said they were using the meet to plan for the future.

The girls are gearing up for sectionals Thursday, and the boys are preparing for sectionals in a few short weeks.

"We switched some people around tonight," said Valley girls and boys swimming coach Steve Doerscher. "We didn't want everyone to swim too much so several girls swam in just three events instead of their regular four."

"Tippy swam off against us, but we swam a hard lineup against them," said Warsaw girls swim coach Eric Moehler. "For the most part, we sent in our sectional lineup. That way the girls get one more meet of experience before the sectional."

"This was a fun meet because we swam different events than we normally do," said Warsaw boys swim coach Chris Lalonde. "Our guys did a really good job tonight because they are really tired after the NLC meet Saturday."

Each coach agreed that the teams swam well, and overall they were pleased with the performances of the teams.

"I'm happy with how we swam," said Moehler. "Senior Captain Sarah Noggle dropped four seconds off her 200 freestyle time, Becky Cook dropped a second off her (butter)fly, and Captain Kathryn Masur dropped two seconds from her 100 freestyle.

"The captains really came through and set the pace for the rest of the team."

Although Warsaw came out on top, Valley is still optimistic about Thursday's sectional in Warsaw.

"I'm very pleased with the team's performance tonight," said Doerscher. "Hilary Vanlandingham had her best time in the 100 butterfly, and Amber Drudge took two seconds off her individual medley time.

"Alyssa Anglin also had a good time in the breaststroke, and she almost won it. For her first time competing in the event she had a good time, considering she normally swims the freestyle and backstroke."

In the boy's competition, Warsaw came out on top, 131-55.

"The guys did a really good job even though they were tired tonight," said Lalonde. "Kiel Beehler in the 500 freestyle and Mark Howard in the 100 (butter)fly put forth a great effort.

"Pat Haas came through and swam a 25.43 in the 50 freestyle. That definitely helps plan for next year."

"Brett Kollin had his best time in the 400 relay tonight," said Doerscher. "Things are coming along nicely."

The Warsaw boys swim team travels to Fort Wayne South Side to compete against Snider and Bellmont; Valley's boys team hosts Fort Wayne Dwenger Wednesday. The girls teams from Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley will compete in the sectional at Warsaw Thursday evening.
