Tiger Spikers Fall Short Of Upset

GOSHEN - Most coaches would say this is the greatest thing about high school sports: that on any given day, anybody can beat anybody.
And when Warsaw's 17-16 volleyball team took to the court with 28-4 Concord Saturday in the semifinal round of the Goshen Sectional, it almost got the job done.
Concord topped the Tigers 15-12, 15-9.
"We almost did that (pulled an upset)," said Warsaw coach Tanya Coon. "The girls played well. There were some bad calls but I'm not going to blame the game on that. We made some mistakes but we played well."
The Minutemen took a quick 3-0 lead in the first game and eventually built it to 5-1, but, as the Tigers would do all afternoon, they fought back
Down by four, Warsaw sent junior Andrea Saldivar to the serving line and the Tigers cut the deficit to one.
Warsaw kept it close and tied the game at 7 and 10, and at one point were down 14-12.
"We got back in the game," said Coon. "We never really got behind until the second game. We made some runs, they just played better. I'm not going to take anything away from my team, they played well."
In the second game, junior Amie Poling put Warsaw on 2-1, but after three points served by Jaime Hershberger and two by Tracy Szerencse, Concord led 6-3. With Ryann Jones serving, the Tigers got as close as 6-5, but the Minutemen quickly jumped their lead to 12-6 and went on to win the match 15-9.
Coon was asked what Warsaw's downfall was in that stretch of the second game.
"There were just some mental mistakes on our part," said Coon. "We didn't get some balls played up. We had really good hitting and the defense was good but at crucial times we couldn't get the ball up."
Junior Lindsay Woods led Warsaw Saturday with eight kills, one solo block and four assisted blocks. Junior Kara Kesler added seven digs, one solo block and six assisted blocks.
Before the season started Coon was quoted as saying: "I think we have a strong candidate for winning our conference and regional. We have a good chance of going to state."
The Tigers finished 2-4 this season in the Northern Lakes Conference and 17-17 overall.
Saturday Coon was asked if she would stand by the statement she made.
"I still think we have the talent to get there next year," said Coon Saturday. "We have the talent to get us there. I'm not disapointed at all. It's good to end the season playing like this."
