Tiger Softball Team Downs Goshen

It wasn't the prettiest of wins for Warsaw's varsity softball team, but it was a win nonetheless.

"It was a win, but it certainly wasn't a pretty win," said Warsaw coach Tanya Kempton, whose Tigers hosted and defeated Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen 6-3 Wednesday. "We didn't practice well Tuesday, and it looked like we had a bad game tonight. But we still won."[[In-content Ad]]After yielding a run to the Redskins in the top of the first inning, Warsaw put five runs of its own on the scoreboard in the home half and later withstood a Goshen rally to improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Both teams were charged with two errors. The Tigers pounded out five hits in the win, while the Redskins finished the game with four hits.

After senior pitcher Kelcy Martin struck out the first three Goshen batters in the fourth inning, the Tigers added to their cushion, taking a 6-1 lead when sophomore Kelci Freds slid safely into home.

The Redskins rallied in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 6-2 when sophomore Katelynn Flory belted a home run over the leftfield fence. With two outs, Goshen junior Emily Kerns came up to the plate two batters later, got on base and scored another Redskin run because of Tiger errors.

Freshman Natalie Newell stepped up to the plate next, reaching base via a walk, but the Redskin rally ended when freshman Kaitlyn Troyer's pop fly was caught for the third out.

"We definitely started the game well," said Kempton. "There were parts of the game we just didn't play that good. We didn't practice well (Tuesday) night, but we were still able to win, I'm happy about that."

Just like she did in the fourth inning, Martin struck out the first three Goshen batters in the sixth inning, and then struck out the first two of the seventh inning.

"She definitely started to improve a the game went on," Kempton said of Martin.

The talented senior hurler was credited with the win, her second in three days, as she threw a one-hitter Monday at NLC foe Wawasee that led the Tigers to a 12-1 win in five innings.

Against Goshen, Martin pitched all seven innings. She struck out 11 and walked two.

At the plate, Warsaw senior Allison Reichard led the way with a double and a single. Teammates Heather Shepherd, Carlye Snider and Kaitlyn Gruenewald had one hit each.

The Tigers are in action again Friday when they host conference rival Plymouth at 5 p.m.
