As the Warsaw Marching band worked on its upcoming performance, "The Fire Within," the Tiger boys tennis team was making music of their own. With an all-around solid performance, Warsaw was able to beat rival Wawasee, 5-0 Tuesday.

Warsaw's Ray Truman dispatched Warrior Kyle Jackson using a strong first serve and a drop shot with incredible back english on the ball. One of the lighter moments of the evening came when Truman, up 4-1 in the first set, returned a ball that balanced itself for what seemed a full second on the net before dropping for the point.

"This is Ray's senior year. We've put him at doubles, however, our team was a lot stronger when I moved him to No. 1 (singles). He's played some really tough competition," said Andy Lewis, Warsaw head coach, of Truman.

In the final match of the night, with the outcome no longer in question, the doubles tandem of Austin Francalancia and Mike Chanthalangsy were in a dogfight with Wawasee's Ryan Harkleroad and Kris Hively. Harkleroad and Hively cruised in the first set 6-2 while Francalancia and Chanthalangsy struggled to win the second set 7-6 (7-5).

"They came out a little flat. I don't think they thought Wawasee was going to be that strong and Wawasee played a great match," said Lewis of his No. 2 doubles play.

On the other side of the net, Harkleroad and Hively were enthusiastic, aggressive and looked to steal the match.

In the third and final set, despite great shots by both tandems, the return ability of Warsaw was too much.

Chanthalangsy ended the match with a second service return to break Wawasee and win the decisive set 6-3.

"They just made too many mistakes and couldn't get to the net in time," said Wawasee head coach Mandy Perzanowski of her No. 2 doubles team.

Despite the loss, Perzanowksi was impressed with the effort not only of Harkledroad and Hively but her entire team.

"I'm not disappointed. As a match, I think we could have played better and 5-0 doesn't look very good, but if people look at the scores, they can tell they fought really hard."

In the night's other matches, Jason Sells struggled in the first set against Wawasee's Ethan Drent before pulling away, 6-4, 6-2. The other's singles match of the night saw Warsaw's Ben Voorhorst handle Justin McDowell 6-1, 6-3.

Blaine Sumpter and Alex Hannah had trouble against Wawasee's Chris Cavell and Andy Custer, but prevailed 7-5, 6-4.

Warsaw, 4-3 overall and 3-1 NLC, travel to Northwood Thursday. Wawasee, 4-7 overall and 0-5 in the NLC, are at home against Elkhart Memorial Thursday.
