"In a zone," "streaking," or simply "hot."

Call it what you will, but Warsaw's Kim Paczkowski and Anne Jarrette found the rhythm midway through their semifinal match with Manchester at No. 1 doubles. They carried that rhythm over against Wawasee in the finals as Warsaw won a competitive sectional title on Saturday.

The semifinals pitted Wawasee against Valley and Warsaw against Manchester on Saturday morning. As expected, Wawasee had an easy time with Valley winning all five matches in straight sets to move on to the finals.

However, the other semifinal matchup was grueling. Warsaw's Kim Bradley methodically won at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kari Hostetler, but that was one of the few quick matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Kristy King and Amy Manges jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but Paczkowski and Jarrette then caught fire. They fought back to 6-6 and then won the tie-breaker 7-0.

"They had it and they just couldn't hold on," Manchester coach Don Snell said. "That happens sometimes, but they played as hard as they could. You can't ask for anything more than that."

Despite playing through sickness, the Tigers' Krista Coppes battled Josalyn Roth for almost 2 1/2 hours before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, but Warsaw still held on for the win.

The big question was then rest. By the time Warsaw finally finished off Manchester, there was only a bit more than one hour before the team would be back on the court again. Wawasee was long gone, having quickly disposed of Valley.

"There are split sets in three out of the five matches," Wawasee head coach Phil Mishler said of the Warsaw semifinal win. "That's definitely going to be an advantage for us. We're playing good tennis, we're at the top of our game right now. I guess we're the underdog, but we're rolling."

"The heat is a factor, our matches were longer, we had three three-setters," Warsaw head coach Jeannie Glunt said. "It's definitely going to take a toll on us this afternoon."

After a short break, Warsaw and Wawasee came out to battle for the sectional championship.

Paczkowski and Jarrette continued where they let off against Manchester defeating Stephanie Shivers and Laura Gunden 6-1, 6-1. However, Wawasee won the first set in three of the five matches.

Bradley continued playing well by defeating Theresa Lundin 6-3, 6-4, and Coppes turned around a 1-6 first set loss into a three set victory with a 7-5, 6-4 comeback over Mandy Perzanowski.

Wawasee's Kara Mathew dominated Aynsley Small at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2, but that was the only match that Wawasee would win as the Tigers won the sectional.

"They have played a ton of tennis," Glunt said. "Krista, at No. 2, after all was said and done, was able to pull off a three-setter. The heat's been a real factor. We've got a sprained ankle, a recovering tonsilitis and stomach cramps. But through a lot of adversity, we were able to pull it off today."

Warsaw will move on to the tennis regional on Tuesday at Elkhart Central.

"We're going to practice Monday and we'll be practicing on Tuesday," Glunt said. "We've steadily gotten better and it's a good time of the year to be doing that. So, I think we're ready for regionals."
