Tiger Hoops Coach On Hot Seat

Doug Ogle's future as the Warsaw Community High School varsity boys basketball coach may hinge on a meeting tonight

Dr. Robert Haworth, Warsaw Schools superintendent, said part of tonight's meeting at 6 p.m. will be for discussion regarding Ogle's performance as the coach. It will be held in the board room at the Central Administration Office, Warsaw.

"No vote will be taken, however, tonight," he said.[[In-content Ad]]But school board members Deb Wiggins and Delores Hearn said it is possible the school board could vote tonight if a recommendation or motion is presented.

Wiggins said it would be inappropriate for Haworth to say what the school board is going to do tonight. She said she is uncomfortable with anyone telling her about her ability to make a motion. Haworth makes recommendations, and the school board members make the motions and take the votes, she said.

Wiggins could not confirm whether Ogle has been asked to resign.

Hearn said she knows the purpose of tonight's meeting is to take a look at the issue and take input from the public.

"We want to hear from the public," Hearn said.

The meeting will be an open forum regarding Warsaw coaches, specifically Ogle. Anyone who wants to speak at the forum regarding Ogle or any other matter on the agenda may do so, with a three-minute time limit per person.

Haworth said the board also will discuss two other personnel issues with regard to the Family Medical Leave Act.

"We all know the importance of athletics in schools," said Haworth. He said athletics can help unite a community, and Warsaw Schools wants to make sure its athletic programs continue to unite the community. After all the dust settles, Haworth said, he hopes sports will continue to unite the community.

Ogle was in class and meetings this morning and could not be reached for comment.

Ogle took over the varsity head coach position during the 2002-03 school year, after Al Rhodes retired. Ogle's record as head basketball coach is 78-54.

During the past few months, WCHS head football Coach Troy Akers stepped down to become the WCHS principal. He was replaced by former Warsaw coach Phil Jensen. John Snyder, WCHS girls basketball varsity coach, resigned, and the position has not been filled. Wrestling coach Tony Boley resigned, as did volleyball coach Doug West. Mike Getz, girls soccer coach, also resigned.

Dave Fulkerson, athletic director, resigned earlier this year. Fulkerson will be replaced by Joe Santa.

Warsaw School Board members are Wiggins, Tammy Dalton, Hearn, Chuck Sauders, Secretary Gene England, President Ron Yeiter and Vice President Dan Robinson.
