Going into last night's gymnastics competition with Wawasee, Warsaw's coach Amanda Campbell was hoping the Tigers could compete with the Warriors. However, the Tigers did more than compete with Wawasee, they won the close meet by just 1.525 points, 99.775-98.25.

Jillian Letsch led the Tigers by placing first in the vault, the beam and the all-around events. Letsch also set two school records in the competition. With a score of 9.1 on the balance beam, Letsch set the mark for highest beam score in Warsaw history. The she raised the standard for the top all-around score for a Warsaw gymnast with a 35.775.

After the vault and uneven bar competitions, Warsaw held a slim 50.225-49.75 advantage over Wawasee. But as in many competitions, the beam was the deciding factor in the competition.

"The beam makes or breaks a meet," said Campbell. "It's a mental thing, a mental game."

Both Warsaw and Wawasee had trouble on the beam. Only two gymnasts, Letsch and Lisa Ummel stayed on the beam for their entire routines.

"Angie (Beer) is usually our leader on the beam," said Wawasee coach Nika Prather. "She averages a high eight or low nine, usually around 8.8, but she fell three times tonight. I don't think I saw her fall three times all season last season. She was really feeling the pressure."

Despite a lower-than-usual beam score, Beer placed second in the all-around after placing first on the uneven bars and the floor exercise. Wawasee's Katie Brown place third in the all-around portion of the meet.

Warsaw's Kim Love, who has been out with an injury since Christmas break, competed in the all-around for the first time since the the first meet of the season and placed fourth for the Tigers.

"This was Kim Love's first meet back in the all-around since her ankle injury, and she did very well," said Campbell.

Overall, both coaches were pleased with their teams' performances.

"I was not sure what to expect tonight, but I think we did fairly well," said Campbell. "We had some trouble on the beam. Our top three had a solid meet with the exception of the beam."

"As a whole, we did pretty well," said Prather. "We haven't had a meet in a while. Last Thursday, our meet was canceled, and the meet before we only had three-quarters of a meet because the bars were broken at the host school.

"It's just good to have a meet, a full meet. We did well and I saw some good things. This is a good stepping stone, and I think we'll be ready by sectional."
