Tiger Grapplers Rough Up Plymouth

PLYMOUTH - A hard-working Warsaw Tiger wrestling team beat up on Plymouth, winning eight of 12 matches with six falls and two major decisions Tuesday to score a 50-21 win.
Assistant coach Anthony Boley pointed to a good week of practice, saying, "After reviewing our performance from the Mishawaka tournament, we adjusted some fine points and worked on refining technique."
In the Northern Lakes Conference contest at Plymouth, wrestling opened at 160 pounds, with Blake Deaton falling to Jake Clough in an 11-2 major decision. Tom Lowe (171) gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish when he racked up a 14-1 major decision against Coty Singleton. Lowe scored most of his points with four nearfalls, but could not score a fall.
Taylor Julian (189) racked up a 7-0 lead in the opening 30 seconds and scored an additional three-point nearfall in the first period before nailing John Papi at the 3:20 mark. Evan Readle (215), nailing a takedown in the first 10 seconds, then six points in the opening minute of the second period, stuck Terry Keyser in 3:12.
With a forfeit awarded to Hans Sale (275), the Tigers were up 22-4.
Carefully following the instructions from the Tiger coaching staff, freshman Justin Brooks (103) easily dispatched Chuck Holmquest in 1:17. Then Steven Palladino worked past a tenuous first period with a mere 2-0 lead and stormed through the second period to take a solid 8-5 lead before pinning Michael Roach early in the final period at the 4:47 mark. Palladino's pin gave the Tigers a commanding 34-4 lead.
Josh Flannery (119) and Jerry Belcher (125) each lost in major decisions and Nick Missos (135) battled hard against Kyle Campbell through three periods in a tough 6-4 loss.
Even if Plymouth had managed to win by falls in all the remaining matches, it was all over but the shouting, with the Tigers holding an insurmountable lead of 34-15. The Tigers showed no mercy, winning the next three matches soundly before giving up a forfeit.
In the first period of his 135-pound match against Adam Read, Tiger sophomore Matt Elvidge amassed a 12-1 lead with three nearfalls and a couple of takedowns before carefully putting away the Plymouth freshman in 3:35.
Warsaw freshman Adam Keener (140) had Alex Morris on his back three times but no fall resulted and Keener settled for a 14-2 major decision. Andy Keener (145) put Derrick White on his back one time and in 1:24 sealed the deal with a fall. After the Tiger forfeit in the 152-pound class, the final scored stood at 50-21.
"We've still got a long way to go," said head coach Tony Boley. "We just missed opportunities to finish off some opponents, but we're working hard."
Boley is eager for the invitational Saturday at East Noble, a bracketed tournament for individual champions.
Warsaw now boasts a conference record of 3-1 (11-6 overall).
There has been a change from the Tigers' published schedule. Tuesday's home match with Northridge has been moved to Middlebury in order to even out travel obligations. Plymouth now stands at 11-7 overall, 1-4 in the NLC, and travels to Elkhart Memorial Thursday.
