The Warsaw varsity wrestling team crushed Northern Lakes Conference foe Concord 70-3 to remain undefeated on the season (8-0, 2-0 NLC).Ê

Senior Steve Fribley also kept his perfect record after a 5-3 win over seventh-ranked Chris Leffert.

Warsaw went through the first eight weight classes without a loss.Ê

Freshman Anthony Boley (103 pounds) started the Tigers off by pinning Chris Hunsberger.Ê Concord forfeited the next three matches leaving the team score 24-0.

Warsaw's Tim Roe (130) also came through with a pin of Jason Bleiler, while David Sumpter (135) managed an overtime win against Brett Bultemeier.

Joe Swanson (140) squeezed Patrick Simpson with the quickest pin of the evening in 46 seconds, and then Warsaw's Richard Wolfe pinned Nathan Boyce with only 26 seconds remaining in his match.

The team score stood at 45-0.

Tiger sophomore Adam Booher (152) stepped forward against Concord senior Brian Emmerson. Booher filled in for Warsaw's Matt Zellers, who sat out the evening due to an injury.

After falling behind 4-2 in the first period, Booher kept coming back and was ahead 9-8 in the final period. With 14 seconds remaining, a point was awarded to Emmerson for an escape, resulting in a tie at the end of regulation.

Emmerson won the match in overtime, but Warsaw coach Tony Boley expressed pride in how Booher wrestled.

With the team score at 45-3, Warsaw came face-to-face with some strong wrestlers from Concord's state runner-up football team.Ê

Warsaw's Isaac Perry (160) dominated Jacob Creasbaum, pinning him in 3:03, then Kris Hueber (171) quickly pinned Sam Hamilton in 1:24, taking the team score to 57-3.

Fribley (189) took on Leffert, who is ranked seventh in the state. Fribley was not intimidated, attacking immediately to score an early takedown for two points. Leffert came back with a reversal to gain control and tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period. In the second period, Fribley escaped and grabbed another takedown, but then Leffert escaped, leaving the score at 5-3. The final period saw Fribley aggressively seek a pin to maintain control of Leffert through the end of the match for his 5-3 win.Ê

After the match, Fribley said he had previously lost to Leffert five times. The two will probably meet again Saturday at the Elkhart Memorial Invitational.

ÊIn the final two matches of the evening, Steve McKinley (215) and Joey Navarro (275) gave clinics on takedowns.Ê McKinley scored five takedowns as he defeated Michael Robinson by major decision, 16-7. Joey Navarro had takedowns when he pinned Jay Rickard in 3:38.

ÊIn the junior varsity exhibition matches, five Tigers scored pins: Nick McKinley, Adam Galvin, Josh Meek, Ben Sweeny and David Ferguson.Ê Joel Burner lost a tough decision in his match.

All these pins and the 70-3 final varsity score had to please Boley, but he was more impressed with the technique demonstrated by his wrestlers.Ê

"We had some problems last Saturday at Lake Central," Boley said, "but we made some big steps of improvement tonight on some basic fundamentals."

The Tigers next travel to Saturday's Elkhart Memorial Invitational, important preparation for the Tigers since in this event they will face a number of teams they will meet again in sectional and regional events.

"We are working," Boley said, "toward the state tournament."
