Tiger Grapplers Lose At Regional
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
ELKHART - Warsaw concluded the dual wrestling season at the Jimtown Regional, losing to Jimtown 30-25. Goshen won the Regional Championship.Ê After trouncing Fremont 60-9 in the first round, Goshen went on to defeat Jimtown 29-26 in the finals.
After the Tigers loss in the first round, Warsaw coach Tony Boley said to his wrestlers, "You came up here and took it to 'em."
"We have nothing to be ashamed of," he continued, "we had the place rocking and rolling out there."
Against Jimtown, Anthony Boley (103 pounds) came out on the short end of a high-scoring match, losing 11-8 to Bryan Wallace. Adam Harter (112) evened the team tally for the Tigers, beating Billy Moyer by a 3-0 score.
This 3-3 tie in the team score would be the closest Warsaw would come to Jimtown as the Tigers lost the next two matches.Ê John Milton (119) fell victim to a Charles Koecke pin in 3:15 and Adam Bott lost a 2-6 decision to Aaron McCuddy.Ê Tim Roe (130) came back with a strong 7-0 decision over Brad Clark but Grady Randall (135) was bundled up quickly in a tight cradle by
Dan Black (1:11).
Joe Wildman (140) finished his varsity career with an exciting win, taking on Brett Miller.Ê Miller came out and grabbed the first take down for a 2-0 lead.Ê Wildman was awarded a penalty point when Miller illegally locked his hands.Ê Wildman still broke free for an escape, knotting the score at two apiece.Ê The Warsaw senior kept his head up and nailed his own takedown, ending the first period ahead 4-2.Ê Wildman was on the move in period two and shot another takedown, although Miller broke loose as the period ended, leaving the score at 6-3.Ê From the down position in the third period, Wildman immediately stood up to earn a one point escape and quickly scored another takedown.Ê The Tiger worked relentlessly to score a pin for the team but Miller escaped and was awarded a takedown.Ê Wildman came out
the 9-6 winner.
Richard Wolfe (145) faced Shawn Barnett.Ê Wolfe seemed to be holding his own but suddenly he was on his back and became the victim of another Jimtown
pin with only ten seconds remaining in the period at 1:50.
Warsaw was down by a score of 9-24, but a win for the team was still within reach when Matt Zellers (152) came up against Clint Pontius.Ê In a rare event Zellers missed the first takedown as Pontius wriggled around to gain control for the two-point score.Ê Zellers scored a reversal and took absolute control for the remainder of the match, gunning for three takedowns, an escape, and a two-point near fall to win by an 11-3 major
decision.
Isaac Perry (160), in a 5-1 decision, out-maneuverd David Clark taking
the team score 16-24.Ê Kris Hueber (171) could not out-muscle Eric Fisette,
losing a tough 2-4 decision.Ê Steve Fribley (189) "butted heads" with Chris
Smith.Ê Neither wrestler was able to score a takedown in the three periods.Ê
After a scoreless first period, Fribley escaped in period two and Smith escaped in period three, leaving the scored tied at one to one.Ê In the overtime period a slick move by the Frib gave him the takedown and the 3-1
win.Ê The team score stood at 19-27.
Steve McKinley (215) lost a tough 0-5 decision to Mark Hurtt, and Jimtown was out of reach.Ê The Jimmies forfeited to Joey Navarro (275) and the final score was 30-25.
Coach Boley returned to the theme of the need for more experience:
"Freestyle would give the guys just the edge they need to win those close
maches."Ê He invited anyone from the Warsaw School system to get involved in
freestyle wrestling.Ê "Our first practice is Tuesday, February 9 from 6:00
to 7:30 PM in the wrestling room at the Career Center Gym," Boley noted.Ê
This practice is for kids from kindergarten to sixth grade.Ê Anyone interested can call me at home (269-6088)," he said, "or I can be reached by
voice mail at 267-7508 ext 1400."Ê Boley says that these practices will be
under the directon of Coach Mike Patrick until the Tigers finish the State
Tournament.
Again the Tigers came within one match of pulling off a big upset of the
state-ranked Jimmies.Ê Although the Tigers won half the matches, Jimtown's
three pins gave them the win.Ê Boley pointed to specific individual
improvements in various wrestlers as he turned the team's attention to
Saturday's regional competition for individuals at Goshen.Ê "We're taking
twelve wrestlers up there, so lets have some fun and go on to the
semi-state."
