Jarrett Continues Strong Rookie Season
By Dale Hubley, Times-Union Sports Writer
TOLEDO, Ohio - With just four races remaining in the 2001 season, 25-year-old ML Motorsports driver Jason Jarrett has all but wrapped up ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie of the Year honors.
Already enjoying a comfortable lead over fellow contenders Todd Bowsher and Donny Morelock, the third-generation North Carolina racer only added to his advantage Sunday by qualifying second and finishing third in the Jasper Engines & Transmissions 200 at Toledo Speedway.
In the last six events, Jarrett and the Warsaw-based stock car team have finished second three times, third twice and eighth once.
"We've led laps in the last seven races," ML Motorsports crew chief Scott Eldridge said. "You just have to put yourself in position to win, and we're doing that. We'll get one (win) here. Things are going good right now. We've got three big-track races left and I know we'll be superb there."
Jarrett, whose father sits third in the NASCAR Winston Cup standings, certainly put himself in position Sunday in his first appearance at the half-mile oval in northern Ohio.
After spending much of the 200-lap event in second and third, Jarrett took the lead on lap 186 when frontrunners Frank Kimmel and Andy Belmont pitted during a caution brought out when Kentucky driver John Hayden made contact with the turn 4 wall.
The ML Motorsports entry led the next four laps, but running on seven cylinders, was passed by Kimmel and Belmont on lap 190.
Kimmel, a Jeffersonville native, took the checkered flag to pick up his third consecutive win. The win was the 10th of the year for the two-time and defending ARCA champion and 33rd of his career.
Belmont finished second, followed by Jarrett, Jeff Finley, Mike Buckley, Ron Cox, Roger Blackstock, A.J. Henriksen, Norm Benning and Steve Cronenwett in the top 10. Morelock and Bowsher finished 13th and 17th, respectively, while 16-year-old Indiana driver Shelby Howard started 20th and finished 18th after rear end problems ended his day 41 laps from the finish.
"I'm not disappointed that we finished third, it's just frustrating losing to the same car (Kimmel) every week," Jarrett said. "They've got a great team and all, but they're not that much better than us. It's just frustrating to not know what the difference is."
Jarrett chased Kimmel and ran in second for the first 75 laps before being passed by the aggressive Belmont, who worked his way through the field by nudging competitors out of the way. By the end of the race, the front grill on his Ford was heavily damaged.
With Texas driver Chuck Weber hitting the turn 4 wall on lap 79, Jarrett opted for pit road, running third and returning to the track in fourth.
After shuffling through a pit cycle on lap 126, Jarrett worked his way through the field and took over second again on lap 153.
With 18 laps remaining, Hayden careened into the wall, setting up the final pit stops and the winning pass for Kimmel.
"We didn't really have a good car on the first set of tires," Eldridge said. "When we got the second set on we really seemed to pick it up. We came in and pitted when nobody else did, and the cards really played into our hands."
After Sunday's third-place finish, Jarrett and the ML Motorsports team remains second in the ARCA season standings, trailing Kimmel and leading Belmont.
Before the race, officials conducted a ceremony in memory of the victims of this past week's national tragedy. The hood of Jarrett's Pontiac carried the message "We Race In Their Memory."
NASCAR and IRL called off this weekend's events, as did the NFL and Major League Baseball. At the ARCA race, fans dropped donations into drivers' helmets prior to the race to be sent to New York and Washington D.C.
"Things still didn't feel right, but I thought ARCA made the right decision to run," Jarrett said.
The ML Motorsports team will be in action Saturday in a previously postponed race at Berlin Speedway in Marne, Mich.
