Tiger Golfers Advance Past Rough Rozella
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
The scoreboard at Rozella Ford Golf Club may have said No. 10 Columbia City won the girls golf sectional Saturday, but Warsaw coach Bob Turner and Tippecanoe Valley coach Roger Moriarty had a different winner in mind.
"Who won today, Rozella Ford won today," Turner said. "I've played this course and seen too many teams play this course. This course separates the better teams from the teams that struggle."
Said Moriarty: "The scores were high today due to the wind and the cool weather. Rozella won again today."
The scores were high Saturday, but when all was said and done, Columbia City's 387 was low enough to take home the trophy.
Warsaw finished second with a 390, while No. 14 Goshen was third with a 397.
The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, will participate in Saturday's East Noble Regional at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville.
"I thought all along Columbia City was the team to beat and that second was between Goshen and us," Turner said. "If somebody would have said Columbia City would shoot 387, I'd have been sure we would have beat that today, but everybody was high."
Among other local teams competing, Wawasee finished seventh with a 444, Valley was ninth with a 457, Whitko was 10th with a 460 and NorthWood rounded out field with an 11th-place score of 479.
Andrea Brown led Columbia City with a 93, while Amanda Lowe and Lisa Brookes shot a 90 and 100, respectively. Other Eagle scores were Kim Spreen 104 and Katie Brandon 106.
Senior Kerri Wrobel led Warsaw with her individual medalist score of 88, shooting a 43 on the front nine and a 45 on the back.
"Kerri Wrobel smashed her finger in a door the night before and was questionable," Turner said. "And then she goes out and shoots an 88. She's a leader."
Wrobel won a playoff round with Elkhart Central's Sara Kitt, who shot 45 on the front and 43 on the back. Kitt will advance to the individual regional as will Concord's Renee Suter and Wawasee's Ashley Ward, who both shot 95.
Other scores for Warsaw were Lara Reed 94, Erin Elliott 100, Jaci Thallemer 108 and Abby Schori 108.
Turner's Tigers have advanced to the regional round 11 of his 13 years at Warsaw. The Tigers failed to advance past the sectional in his first two years as coach.
To go with Ward's 95, Carrie Alles shot a 107, Rebecca Stoelting a 117, Ashley Bell a 125 and Aimee Niles a 139 for Wawasee.
The Warriors were in fifth-place at the turn with a score of 225.
Kendra Koser led Valley with her 106, shooting 54 on the front and 52 on the back. Other Valley scores were Jenni Yeiter 111, Trista Moyer 113, Hannah Ervin 127 and Kelly Moon 130.
The Vikings finished the regular season with a 6-20 mark and will return their entire lineup next year. Valley last advanced from the sectional in 1993.
"We've got everybody back next year," Moriarty said. "We just need to play more golf in the summer."
Whitko shot a 238 on the front nine Saturday. Ashley Schrader led the Wildcats over 18 holes with a 106. Melissa Krider and Beth Truman followed with a 110 and 114, respectively, while Marla Rowland and Angie Herron totaled a 130 and 132, respectively.
Saturday's East Noble Regional will also feature top 20 teams Fremont (No. 9), DeKalb (No. 11) and Homestead (No. 18).
