Tiger Girls Soccer Team Sinks Lakeland Lakers

GOSHEN - After losing key pieces to its impressive defense of a year ago, the puzzle is coming together at the right time for Warsaw's varsity girls soccer team.
After opening up sectional action Monday night at Bethany Christian with a 5-0 win over NorthWood, the Tigers were just as impressive Wednesday night in the semifinals when they put together a 6-0 win over Lakeland.
"We've gotten our defense together," said Warsaw coach Mike Getz. "Last year we had one of the top defenses in the area. We lost two key players and we really had to look at our defense and see who would step up. Lindsay Anderson has been a big key."
Anderson scored what proved to the game-winner when she took the ball 30 yards out and converted on a field-goal type kick with 26:27 left in the first 40-minute half.
Just over three minutes later the Tigers got a goal from senior Tracy Stump, who stole the ball from a Lakeland player and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
After a give-and-go that resulted in a score for senior Ashley Kitchens, the Tiger went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
"They (Lakeland) came out with so much energy and intensity," Getz said. "We just kind of sat back and let things come to us. Our skill in the end came through for us at key points."
The Tigers wasted no time in getting things going in the second half, as Stump scored her second goal just four minutes after the intermission.
Freshman Katy Taylor, added to the varsity roster after playing junior varsity this season, proved her worth as she netted the final two goals to account for the 6-0 score.
All totaled, the Tigers had 20 shots on goal, while the Lakers had but two. Warsaw had six corner kicks in the game, while Lakeland had none.
The shutout was the sixth in six games for the Tigers, who haven't given up a goal since a 1-0 loss to No. 5 South Bend St. Joe on Sept. 20.
The win improved Warsaw to 11-4-3 on the season and advanced them to Saturday's 5 p.m. sectional championship game against host Bethany Christian, which beat Westview 1-0 in Wednesday's first semifinal game.
The Tigers played Bethany Christian on Sept. 30 - the first game after the loss to state-ranked St. Joe - with the game ending in a scoreless tie.
