GOSHEN -ÊThe Warsaw girls soccer team may not have won the semistate against South Bend St. Joseph's Saturday night, but they did win something almost as important - respect.
"To go up 1-0 and hold them to just one goal until overtime," said Warsaw coach Mike Getz after his team's 3-1 overtime loss to the Indians. "I think we gained respect out there today. Some people thought we got the easy road here, and we proved we belonged."
In the final game of the Goshen Semistate, Warsaw jumped out to an early lead. With just 27:06 left on the first-half clock, Tiger freshman Abby Rankin scored the first goal of the game. The unassisted goal came when St. Joe's goal keeper left the box to chase the ball, and Rankin punched the ball to the back of the net to put Warsaw up 1-0. It was just the second time Warsaw had crossed into St. Joe's side of the field.
The Tigers held that lead for nearly 25 minutes until Indian senior Susan Pinnick tied the score at 1-all. Pinnick scored the unassisted goal with 3:45 left in the first half.
"We knew they were more skilled," said Getz, "so we tried to draw them to our end of the field and use our spacing to draw them in and push them back, and it worked for a while."
The Tigers and Indians stayed scoreless through the second half, forcing an overtime period.
At the 4:33 mark of the first overtime period, Pinnick struck again. This time the Notre Dame recruit found the back of the goal off a throw-in to give the Indians a 2-1 advantage.
The St. Joe team scored again with just two ticks left in the first overtime. This time, Lizzi Gerard kicked the goal past the Warsaw goal keeper to put the Indians up 3-1.
After a scoreless second-overtime, the Indians claimed the semistate crown.
"They had a better first match than we did, so they got to rest some of their starters in the first game," said Getz. "And the field gave us a bit of an advantage. We marked Pinnick and kept her contained for a while. To contain a girl like that, that was an accomplishment.
The Indians will compete in the state finals Saturday, and for just the second time in the past 10 years both the boys and girls teams from South Bend St. Joe are going to state.
The Tigers reached the final game by defeating Crown Point 2-1 in the semifinal round of the semistate.
In that game, the Tigers found themselves down 1-0 just four and a half minutes into the game after Crown Point's Adrienne Seip found the back of the net.
However, the Tigers tied things up when Tracy Stump kicked and assist from Lindsay Anderson into the Bulldog goal.
Warsaw took the lead early in the second half. Anderson, a Tiger junior, scored an unassisted goal with just over 30 minutes left in the second half. The ball bounce off the Crown Point goal keeper's hands and into the net on a free kick by Anderson.
"Lindsay Anderson played an outstanding match," said Getz. "I am very proud of all the kids, they played their hearts out."
