Tiger Den Floor to be Replaced

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Tiger Den floor will have a different look to it come this summer.
At the Warsaw School Board public work session Tuesday afternoon, Athletic Director Dave Anson said it’s been 10 years since the last time the Warsaw Community High School Tiger Den floor was refinished all the way down to the wood for maintenance. This summer, it’s time to do that again.
That will provide an opportunity for a whole new design of the floor.
Earlier this year, Anson said, he was sitting in his office with Matt Hoskins of PayProMedia when he mentioned to him that this year for maintenance, the basketball court would “go down to the wood.” Hoskins suggested he and his company help with the redesign of the floor.
Anson showed the board about four of the 30 designs they came up with. Some examples had a “Tiger” font, while others had block lettering on the baselines. Some lettering was in black, other designs had it in white.
“There’s so many variables that they could go with this,” Anson said.
He said they weren’t preparing the surface only for sporting events, but “we’re preparing our living room carpet basically. This is our Parade of Homes so to speak. There will be tens of thousands of people looking at our living room floor, so it is important. There’s been a lot of thought put into it and the process.”
After Hoskins presented the designs to Anson, Anson then polled the sports coaches who use the gym. Various Tiger sports supporters and longtime fans were asked about their preferences, as well as current and past players.
Anson surveyed them about different things that could be put on the floor design, like the Northern Lakes Conference and Indiana High School Athletic Association logos, a tiger, the years WCHS was state champs, a “Welcome to the Tiger Den” and various font designs. One popular design aspect was giant tiger claw marks in the center of the floor, designed by PayProMedia.
In the survey, 17 of 22 people favored the block writing; 12 of 22 like white lines over black lines; 16 favored the claws at midcourt; all 22 preferred the two-tone stain on the floor; and 10 favored block lettering of Tigers in the lanes. The NLC logo was liked by 20, while 14 liked the IHSAA logo; 12 liked the painted tiger, but only five liked the state champs and years WCHS won the championship; and 20 liked some version of “Tiger Den” or “Welcome to the Tiger Den.”
Based on the survey results, Anson said they came up with the final four designs, however, the variables could change. All four had the giant tiger claws on the midcourt.
“Any changes made are miniscule and insignificant to the cost,” Anson said.
The court will take about three weeks, and will be done between late June and early July. Anson re-emphasized that this was the year they had to do the flooring anyway for maintenance.
Dan Metzger, board member, said Anson could just make a decision and bring it to the board for approval.
The bid for the Tiger Den gym floor refinishing is $16,995 from Hammel Floor Service, Huntington. The board will be asked to approve the bid at its regular meeting Monday.
The cost does not include the upper gym floors or the Career Center gym.
The board also will approve the annual gym floor refinishing for the eight elementaries and two middle school buildings. That bid is from Authentic Hardwood Floors, Syracuse, for $29,272.35.
Other quotes the board will vote on will include the installation of a walk-in cooler/freezer for Washington Elementary from Hossinger Refrigeration Inc. for $51,858; SMARTnet coverage and CISCO networking equipment/telephone system renewal from Network Solutions Inc. for $23,755.52; and data warehouse software modules, support services and professional development (year one cost) from Pearson for $64,870.
Director of Food Services Marci Franks also will ask for approval for a lunch price increase. Initially, she thought they would have to ask for a bigger price increase, but after learning about a portions control, she realized that will result in cost savings for the school corporation. They then could pass on those savings to students for school lunches.
However, at the high school, the lunch tray will increase next school year by 10 cents to $2.60, and the salad bar will increase 10 cents to $2.85.
The school board concluded its work session with a review of board policy changes as suggested by NEOLA. The policies range from the board’s annual organizational meeting and executive sessions, to personal communication devices and drug prevention.[[In-content Ad]]
