DUNLAP -ÊThe warmest people at Saturday's regional cross country meet at Ox Bow Park were the runners. With wind, rain and cold, the conditions were not ideal for fast times in a cross country meet. However, the Warsaw girls cross country team overcame the conditions to place fourth and advance to next week's semistate at Manchester High School.

"Under the conditions with the weather and the cold, I told the girls they were probably the warmest ones here," said Warsaw coach Paul Sibray. "They responded well and did what was expected of them."

The Warsaw squad tied for third with DeKalb, but in cross country ties are not allowed. So the officials looked at the sixth place runners to determine the third place team. DeKalb's sixth place runner came in 41st while Warsaw's finished 52nd, so Warsaw had to settle for fourth place.

"We tied for third so they had to go to the sixth person," said Sibray. "We placed fourth, but the top five teams advance, so we are going on."

Although the Tigers advanced to the semistate, Sibray is not content with the performance of his runners.

"We didn't run as strong as we could have," said Sibray. "We ran well, but I know we can run better. But we are going to be back to run next week so that's what counts."

Individually, Hillary Barlow placed eighth with a time of 15:49 while Jennifer Finch ran a 15:53 to finish in the 11th spot. Rachel Rondeau and Summer Boyd also placed in the top 20 for the Tigers.

NorthWood also competed in the regional as a team, but the Panthers did not fare as well as the Tigers. NorthWood placed seventh as a team, two places short of a spot at the semistate.

Cort Sandy was the top Panther runner, placing 20th overall with a time of 16:20.

Warsaw will now focus on its preparation for Saturday's semistate competition in North Manchester.

"First we'll need to get over today," said Sibray. "We'll talk about today and I will try to get them to realize they didn't run their best today. There is always room for improvement.

"We'll pretty much stick to our usual routine this week. We'll continue to work hard. Hopefully we will be in good shape for next week."

Warsaw will continue its quest for a trip to the state meet Saturday in North Manchester when the Tigers face the top 20 teams from Northern Indiana in the semistate. The top five team will advance to the state competition.
