Tiger Boys Too Much For Elkhart Memorial
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Just as Friday night's win was, the upcoming holiday break may be just what Doug Ogle and his Warsaw boys basketball team needs.
Playing their fifth game in nine days, the Tigers put together their best all-around team effort of the year, downing Elkhart Memorial 75-58 in the consolation round of the Northern Lakes Conference/Lake City Bank Holiday Tournament.
Now 5-3 on the season, Warsaw is off until it opens regular season NLC play Jan. 3 at rival Wawasee.
"It was important that we played better and won the game for our team's pysche," Ogle said. "This is a nice way for us to go into Christmas. We're not gonna practice until the 28th, we've got a nice break, and then we'll come back and really get ready for Wawasee."
A matchup of teams that played for last year's holiday tournament championship, as well as a double-overtime thriller in the regular season, Friday's outcome was never really in doubt.
The Tigers, playing on their home court though outfitted in their black road uniforms, jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter, led 22-10 at the end of the opening frame and 41-21 at the half.
A three-pointer by senior reserve David Burnley gave the Tigers a 57-30 advantage, their biggest lead of the game, with 1:58 remaining in the third quarter of action. Only when Warsaw had its reserves in the game did the Crimson Chargers chop into the lead, getting as close as 16, 63-47, with 5:01 to play.
"This is just what we needed, a convincing win," Ogle said. "In this particular situation we have a lot of time to think about some good things. This helps a little bit with the residual feelings of disappointment from Tuesday's NorthWood game."
A year after running the table in the NLC and finishing as regional runners-up with a 20-3 record, the Crimson Chargers fall to 0-7 on the season.
Just as Warsaw turned in a much-needed, confidence-building performance as a team, so did 6-foot-5 Tiger junior Adam Griggs.
Griggs led the Tigers with 18 points, including a 6-of-8 performance from the field, as well as pulling down five rebounds.
"Adam practiced well Wednesday and Thursday," Ogle said. "I'm not surprised he played so well."
For Warsaw, all 10 available varsity players saw action and made their way into the scoring column.
To go with Grigg's 18, senior frontliner Ryan DeGeeter added 15, Ryan Schultz and Todd Braddock eight each, Erik Fussle and Nate Miller seven each, Burnley six, Dan Gensinger four and Michael Wienhorst and Greg Allison a free throw each.
"I like the way the game played out in how we got some players that haven't played as much quite a few minutes," Ogle said.
En route to the convincing win, Warsaw was 21 of 32 from the field and 30 of 44 from the charity stripe. Memorial, on the other hand, struggled shooting the ball, hitting just 19 of 54 field goal attempts, including a dismal 5-of-20 effort from the three-point arc. The Crimson Chargers did, however, connect on 15 of 20 free throw attempts.
Sophomore Darius Jackson led Memorial with 20, while senior Derek Blosser added 16.
