WINONA LAKE - Just the second home match at Stonehenge Golf Club for a young team with a rookie coach, Warsaw's varsity boys golf team continued to play like a crew of veterans Tuesday afternoon.

Posting a 9-hole team score of 149, the Tigers downed visiting South Bend Washington by 10 strokes.

"This is only our second home match, we're getting a lot better," first-year coach and former Warsaw golfer Ben Barkey said. "The first time we shot a 162, we had some bad drives off the tee that caught us. Keeping the tee ball in play has been a big key for us. Our top three scores today were 36, 37, 37. We'll take that any day."

Junior Ben Brodhead led the way for Warsaw, a team with just one senior and two juniors on a 12-man roster, with a 1-over score of 36. Sophomores Jake Brodhead and Chris Hanson both shot 37, while lone senior Jeremy Nieter shot 39 and freshman Skyler Scott 42.

"Ben and Jake are back and forth," Barkey said of the Brodhead brothers. "We don't really have one guy we count on, our one through four players all produce for us. We're getting nice production from everyone just like I thought we would."

The Tigers, who moved home matches from Rozella Ford to Stonehenge this year, are now 5-2 on the season. Warsaw's two losses have come by a combined five strokes - a 1-stroke loss to Culver Military Academy on its own private course and a 4-stroke setback to state-ranked Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian.

"After we lost to CMA by one stroke we took a look at our team," said Barkey, whose older brother Curt is an assistant. "We shot a 148 that day, CMA just shot really well to beat us. We're working on playing smart golf. And in five of our last six matches we've been 150 or better."

While Warsaw was a picture of consistent play and team depth Tuesday, Washington had one golfer at par and another at 1-over, but the rest of the lineup shot 43 or higher.

Luke Pietrucha led the Panthers with a 35, while Bryce Hummer fired a 36, Nick Lipinski 43, Andrew Szczechowski 45 and Kenny Nurenberg 48.

The Tigers are in action again today at Sprig-O-Mint against host LaVille and South Bend Adams and then play in the Homestead Invitational Saturday.
