Tiger Boys Edge Concord Minutemen

DUNLAP -ÊLast saturday Warsaw senior Jerad Shaw threw 18 points in the final period to lead the Tigers past Goshen.

Shaw was once again clutch Friday night scoring 13 of his team high 15 in the fourth quarter. Greg Clay found Shaw underneath the basket with less than a minute to play for what turned out to be a three point play.

Warsaw edged out the Concord Minutemen 55-51 to move their winning streak to 13. The Tigers haven't lost since their first game of the season against Columbia City Nov. 24th.

Friday night's contest was Channel 46's Game of the Week and was played as so. The contest was hotly contested as there were 19 ties or lead changes during the course of the game.

Warsaw took charge early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Concord was plagued early by turnovers and fouls.

Soon it would be the Tigers who found themselves in foul trouble. Shaw, who would be plagued by foul trouble the whole game, picked up his first foul 1:32 into the game and quickly picked up his second at the 4:27 mark on an offensive foul call.

The tandem of Ryan DeGeeter and Hoss Knepper picked up the slack in the post as the tandem combined to score six first-quarter points and give Warsaw the edge in rebounding.

It was the boards that they couldn't get that really hurt the Tigers early. Minutemen forward Steve Warr was strong on the offensive glass two straight possessions and turned those into two easy baskets.

While both teams were a force to be reckoned with inside, the outside shooting of both teams was a different story.

Warsaw's Davin Scott temporarily eased the Tigers' troubles from outside as he connected on a three-pointer in the right corner as the period wound down. The basket gave the Tigers a 14-13 lead after one period.

Brad Seiss continued Warsaw's short hot streak from outside, connecting on a three of his own to start the second quarter. DeGeeter would hit two free throws to stretch Warsaw's lead to nine.

That was the biggest lead either team had all night. The teams would exchange baskets for most of the quarter. Concord began to reassert themselves inside with Warr. Then it was Concord's turn for good fortune from outside. C.J Shafer hit a three-pointer to cut Warsaw's lead to 27-24.

Warsaw called a timeout with 1:35 left in the half and came out with their stall offense. An impatient Concord crowd began chanting "Boring, Boring".

Boring maybe, effective definitely.

The motion offense put Greg Clay at the line with 15.3 seconds left in the half. The senior connected on the front and back of the one-and-one.

Concord stormed quickly down court as Adrian Conrad, the game's leading scorer with 16, worked off a screen and nailed a three-pointer of his own.

The bucket cut Warsaw's lead to 29-27. Warsaw's Scott had a chance to increase the halftime lead when he was fouled with no time remaining and sent to the line for the bonus. He came up short on the front end leaving Concord down by just two going into the locker room.

The Minutemen wasted no time in tying things up.

Senior Micah Staley drove hard through the lane and connected to tie the game.

Warsaw answered when Chris Clay hit a three-pointer, Warsaw's final of the night.

With 6:23 left in the third Shaw picked up his third foul on another offensive charging call.

Visibly frustrated, Shaw was forced to sit out the remainder of the quarter.

Concord took advantage going a small 6-2 run. Warsaw answered back with a 6-2 run of their own. DeGeeter once again stepped up without Shaw in the lineup. He threw in six of his 14 points in that third quarter.

DeGeeter's effort was not enough to put a cushion between Warsaw and the Minutemen. Concord's Steve Casey scored six straight points and once again knotted the score this time at 41-41 going into the final quarter.

Despite being plagued by fouls the entire game, Jerad Shaw was on the floor to start the final period. He quickly made his presence known. He gathered a Greg Clay missed and layed it in to pull the Tigers ahead.

Concord remained tough inside as both Casey and Warr took the ball strong inside on consecutive possessions to put the Minutemen back on top.

Shaw then outscored Concord 6-4 over the next three minutes.

At the 2:40 mark Geoff Walmer found Shaw underneath the basket to tie things up for the 19th and final time.

Concord scored on two straight possessions and come up with no points to show for it. Inside two minutes to play Brad Seiss picked up a DeGeeter miss. The Tigers tried to hold the ball for the final possession.

As Warsaw swung the ball around the perimeter Greg Clay saw Shaw for what became the game winning basket.

After Shaw connected on his free throw, the Minutemen came down and Conrad had a good look at a three pointer to tie the game.

An unkind iron guided the ball to Hoss Knepper. Concord fouled with 10.7 to stop the clock.

The Minutemen were be forced to foul four straight times dwindling the clock down to under five seconds.

"It was an odd game like that." Said Coach Rhodes on the foul situation. "Luckily (Concord) only had a few fouls which allowed us to run some time off the clock. We did a good job of not allowing them to foul us easily."

Concord was finally able to send Greg Clay to the line with 3.1 seconds left.

Clay had his troubles from the field going 0 for 8 in the game. It was his connection on the front end of a one-and-one though that sealed Warsaw's fate.

On his team's 13th straight win Rhodes is cautiously optimistic.

"While I'm happy with our effort I would like to see us get into a better offensive flow," said Rhodes. "But I'm real proud of the heart this team has.We also played 11 guys tonight. That's something you don't often see in a confrence game on the road. Everyone played their part and we came out on top."

Warsaw 13-1 (7-0 NLC) will next face Northwood in Napanee on Friday night.

Valley Girls Roll Over Southwood In TRC Action

By Mike Madison, TImes-Union Sports Correspondent

AKRON -ÊIt would have been easy last night for coach Gary Teel and his Viking basketball team to look past Southwood.

After all, the Tippecanoe Valley girls host No. 7 Wawasee Tuesday night, and Southwood was came in with an overall record of 5-10 and 1-4 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Instead, the Vikings came out ready for business and took it right to Southwood with a full-court pressure defense and some good first quarter shooting.

It all added up to only good things for Valley.

"We got off to a good start," said Teel, "We made some steals. We did a good job with our passing of finding the open kids and I thought we moved the ball really well."

It was all Valley as the Vikings took a 24-9 first quarter lead and never looked back, finishing with a 73-35 win.

For the Vikings it was the balanced effort that seemed to please their coach the most.

"It was really nice to get 12 kids in the game and have 11 of them score," said Teel. "What we would like come tournament time is to have kids coming off the bench contributing, and we had that tonight. The kids who came off the bench did positive things; they scored, they played good defense, they got rebounds, and they made some steals. That's what you have to have down the road to be successful."

That balanced effort saw three Valley players in double figures and two more with nine each, but it might have been the smallest player on the court who came up the biggest.

Sophomore point guard Abby Shafer, all 5-foot-3 of her, finished with a game-high 14 points, seeing only limited playing time. She was also responsible for several steals and a handful of assists.

"Abby has been playing very well," said Teel. "She did a great job tonight. She is just a great athlete and she is a great kid. For a sophomore to come in and take over as point guard as she has is just excellent."

Junior Kathy Prater added 12 points for the Vikings and sophomore Rebekah Parker had 10. Tabitha Pratt and Holly Green contributed nine each.

Valley is 15-2 overall and 5-1 in TRC play.

With Southwood behind them, the Vikings now look to Wawasee and the state's leading scorer, Shanna Zolman.

"It should be a great game," said Teel. "We know we can't shut her down, we will just try to contain her the best we can. I am not looking to do a lot of different things from what we normally do."
